3. Eddleman Joins Family Safety Center -

Vernetta Eddleman has joined the Family Safety Center, Memphis and Shelby County’s center for victims of domestic violence, as director of client services.

In her new role, Eddleman will be responsible for the planning, design, development and management of client services, and will also supervise and train staff and partner agency providers in delivering quality care to victims and their families.

4. Experts Withdraw From Internet Security Conference -

WASHINGTON (AP) – At least eight researchers or policy experts have withdrawn from an Internet security conference after the sponsor reportedly used flawed encryption technology deliberately in commercial software to allow the National Security Agency to spy more easily on computer users.

5. Hoover Joins Agape As Director of Development -

Brian Hoover has joined Agape Child & Family Services as director of development. In his new role, Hoover will be responsible for leading Agape’s development efforts, such as fundraising and special events. He will also oversee the organization’s marketing, public relations and volunteer initiatives.

6. Meeting Needs -

Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett is seeing record numbers of patients after unveiling its $34 million, 83,000-square-foot expansion earlier this month.

The hospital at 2986 Kate Bond Road, which opened in 2004 as a 100-bed facility, features a wide range of medical services, including emergency and intensive care, cardiology, oncology, vascular services, orthopedic and spine services, and a family birthing center.

7. Jobless Rate Jumps To 7.2 Percent in Dec. -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The nation’s unemployment rate bolted to 7.2 percent in December, the highest level in 16 years, as nervous employers slashed 524,000 jobs, capping one of the worst years in modern history for American workers.

8. Continuing Jobless Claims Rise More Than Expected -

The number of people continuing to seek unemployment benefits has risen sharply, according to government data released Thursday, indicating that laid-off workers are having a harder time finding new jobs as the recession enters its second year.
