After a 16-year absence, Germantown residents no longer have to leave their city to enjoy Boscos beer and pizza.

For decades the “Big Three” – Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s – have dominated the pizza industry, but the fast-casual dining concept is changing that.

And one of the new players disrupting the industry is PizzaRev, a fast-casual pizza restaurant with three locations in Memphis.

5. Pizza Chain Cooks Up Growth in Memphis -

Papa Murphy’s has cooked up some ambitious growth plans in Memphis to accompany the pizza pies the Vancouver, Wash.-based chain is known for.

Because of the success of the chain’s eight current stores in the Memphis area, Papa Murphy’s chief development officer and senior vice president of technology Jayson Tipp says the company wants to ramp that up to at least 25.

NEW YORK (AP) – Fast-food chains have a New Year's resolution: Drop the junk.

As people express distaste for food they think is overly processed, McDonald's, Taco Bell and other chains are trying to shed their reputation for serving reheated meals that are loaded with chemicals. That includes rethinking the use of artificial preservatives and other ingredients customers find objectionable.

The little Memphis pizzeria that could will soon be opening a new location in Jackson, Tenn.

The Rock’n Dough Pizza Co., owned by Jeremy and Amanda Denno, is slated to open a new restaurant and microbrewery at the Jackson Walk development in Jackson in October. The Dennos will team up with veteran local brewer Ben Pugh to create signature suds at the 4,100-square-foot restaurant.

19. Shifflett Finds Success as Domino’s Franchisee -

When he was a teenager, as happens with teens throughout the country, Jason Shifflett went looking for a job.

That first part-time job for the Harding Academy student was at a Domino’s Pizza, the first national pizza company to roll out dough in Olive Branch, where he lived.

27. Papa Murphy’s Considers 25 New Local Stores -

Papa Murphy’s, one of the largest pizza companies in the U.S., is looking to grow its Memphis presence exponentially.

The Vancouver, Wash.-based chain is looking to add as many as 25 stores in Memphis, where there are currently two existing Papa Murphy’s locations. That’s according to the company’s chief development officer Kevin King, who said the company already has a similarly strong presence in Nashville, with 20 stores there.

28. Food Truck Alliance Grows With Rodeos -

In 2011, the Memphis City Council passed a food truck ordinance drafted by council members Jim Strickland and Shea Flinn, which allowed self-contained mobile food preparation vehicles to operate in the city of Memphis.

Twenty years ago this month, a trio of businessmen opened a new pizza shop in Overton Square.

And one year after Memphis Pizza Cafe opened its doors, Memphians were hungry enough for the business’ signature thin-crust pizza that a second location soon was in order.

The winter months can be tougher on food truck vendors as cold temperatures often keep paying customers inside. But as spring approaches and nicer weather resumes, many local operators are getting set to ramp up operations.

The St. Louis-based fast-casual sandwich franchise recently filed for its business license at 1961 Union Ave. with the Shelby County Clerk’s Office. The 4,588-square-foot, freestanding space formerly housed Pizza Hut, which relocated west to the Belvedere Collection shopping center.

33. Exeter Buys West Memphis Warehouse for $15.6 Million -

Pennsylvania-based Exeter Property Group has snatched up the Smucker’s distribution warehouse in West Memphis for $15.6 million.

The 600,000-square-foot facility was a foreclosed property from Bank of America, which was selling it with a year-end anticipated closing, said Matt Brodnik, Exeter’s director of capital markets.

34. Restaurants See Plenty of Activity in 2012 -

There were new restaurant openings, expansions and major milestones celebrated.

Alliances were formed, events were debuted and, of course, a few joints were shuttered.

In most respects, 2012 was a banner year for the Memphis food scene, and 2013 could be even more promising, said Patrick Reilly, owner of Majestic Grille and president of the Memphis Restaurant Association.

35. Label Watchers -

Two organizations are combating the area’s obesity crisis and promoting healthier lifestyles by placing an emphasis on food label education.

Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. has partnered with Memphis Pink Palace Museum to create a new interactive lab session called “Learning Labels” that teaches kids about how to read serving sizes on food and beverage labels. Raising nutritional awareness is not only being targeted toward children in the Mid-South. Leadership Memphis recently became a participant in the Healthy Memphis Common Table’s Million Calorie Reduction Match project, and guests at the organization’s recent holiday party at the Mercedes-Benz of Memphis Showroom were provided with nutritional information about the evening’s food, which was catered by several area restaurants.

36. Cooking Channel Show to Spotlight Main Street -

The television food scene has been kind to Memphis this year.

Celebrity chef Guy Fieri recently visited six Memphis-area restaurants for his Food Network show, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” all of which have opened within the past few years.

37. New Panera Underscores Midtown’s ‘Tipping Point’ -

Panera Bread Co. is coming to one of Midtown’s busiest streets following years of site selection in the area.

38. Slice of the Pie -

Come mid-July, local restaurateur Aldo Dean will launch Aldo’s Pizza Pies, his group’s third concept in Memphis and second in Downtown’s Central Business District.

Dean is one of three partners behind the new 3,900-square-foot restaurant on the ground floor of Henry Turley Co.’s Barboro Flats at 100 S. Main St. Adam Slovis of Slovis & Associates LLC represented Dean and his group in its seven-year lease for Aldo’s Pizza Pies.

39. Skunx Chef’s Pub Latest C-Y Eatery -

Duncan Aiken has loved pizza his whole life, though pizza, as he has found out, can be a harsh mistress. It took years to develop a recipe for the kind of crust he favors, years of studying, traveling, working and, of course, eating.

40. Slice of the Market -

The most successful locally owned Mid-South pizzerias set themselves apart from large national chains like Domino’s, Pizza Hut and Papa John’s by offering high-quality ingredients, friendly service and unique dining experiences.

41. Juicy Jim’s Brings Slice of Jersey to Highland Strip -

“Juicy” Jim Matson, proprietor of two Highland Street eateries, learned everything he knows about the pizza business from his mentor, “Greasy” Tony Giorgianni.

As a teenager growing up in New Jersey, Matson tossed dough and bused tables at Giorgianni’s famous New Brunswick eatery, which fed pizza and cheesesteak sandwiches to generations of hungry Rutgers University students.

When most people walk into a neighborhood Italian restaurant, the last thing they expect to see in front of the stove is a lawyer clad in a three-piece suit, but at Lavoro’s it’s not an uncommon sight.

43. Recipe for Success Found at Hungry Howie's -

Loice DeBerry and Jerry Hamlett represent a number of investors who are seeking entrepreneurial independence and success by purchasing a franchise from an already established business.

The two partners recently purchased and opened a Hungry Howie's Pizza franchise in Southaven. They have plans to open a second Memphis-area store in January in Bartlett. The Southaven location is the first franchise of the Michigan-based business to open in the Memphis area.
