Here's a selection of events in Memphis marking the 50th anniversary of the 1968 sanitation workers' strike and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. April 3 is the 50th anniversary of King’s last speech – the “Mountaintop” speech at Mason Temple, while April 4 is the 50th anniversary of his assassination on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.

Memphis Brooks Museum of Art hosts its final community engagement session to gather feedback on its Downtown relocation Tuesday, March 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Memphis fire headquarters (the site of Brooks’ future home), 65 S. Front St. Museum officials are seeking input on several topics as they begin the process of selecting an architect and creating a vision for the new space. 3. Last Word: A Second Juvenile Court Letter, Fred Smith's Tax Plan and Memphis Hops - Wednesday, June 28, 2017

A group of 19 organizations including the Memphis Branch NAACP and 28 citizens sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions urging him to keep in place Justice Department oversight of Juvenile Court. The 12-page letter is a point-by-point detailed response to the June 9 letter from County Mayor Mark Luttrell, Juvenile Court Judge Dan Michael and Sheriff Bill Oldham asking Sessions to end the memorandum of agreement between county government and the Justice Department.

4. SRVS' Saulsberry Honored for Her Work - Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Wendy Saulsberry is one of two recipients of the 2016 Direct Support Professional of the Year for Tennessee by the American Network of Community Options and Resources. Saulsberry is a direct support professional for SRVS, a United Way agency that supports more than 1,200 children and adults with disabilities.
Saulsberry says that as a DSP, she is deeply committed to the well-being of SRVS clients, assists them with their daily activities and advocates on behalf of their interests.

Memphis Reads, the citywide community reading program, will host Dinaw Mengestu, author of Memphis Reads selection “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears” Tuesday, Nov. 4, for a reading at 5:30 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave. Mengestu will also speak at 8 p.m. at the University Theater on the Christian Brothers University campus, 650 East Parkway S. Both events are free.
