4. Moorman Named Chief Scientist at Ducks Unlimited -

Tom Moorman has been named chief scientist of Memphis-based Ducks Unlimited, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to conserving North American waterfowl habitats. Moorman, who will take over from retiring chief scientist Scott Yaich on March 1, has worked for DU for more than 25 years, most recently serving as head of its 13-state Southern Region.
As chief scientist, Moorman will serve as DU’s leader on waterfowl and habitat science, provide vision and direction in addressing DU’s science needs and ensure it maintains its standing and credibility as a top-notch science-based organization.

5. Ernest Strickland Takes On Workforce Role at Chamber -

The Greater Memphis Chamber has promoted Ernest Strickland to senior vice president of workforce development, a newly created role. Strickland, who has worked at the chamber since 2006, previously served as vice president of international and business partnerships.
In his new position, he is responsible for creating and implementing the chamber’s workforce development strategy. His department serves as a liaison, working directly with existing and prospective businesses to ensure they are able to attract and retain a qualified workforce today and in the future.

How long is a cubit? After a day in which many of you got about four to five inches of rain and more to come Thursday, it seems an appropriate and timely question.
And yes, there is a cubit conversion chart on line for converting that and other really old units of measurement no longer in use like the mina, drachma or the synodic month.
So the average cubit, which is supposed to be the length of a forearm, is 18 inches or a foot and a half. That’s 0.4572 of a meter, which might as well be an ancient unit of measurement.
Someone had to say it.
According to biblehub.com – I’m not making up websites – the book of Genesis sets God’s instructions to Noah as an arc with the dimensions of 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits tall. And it was to be made out of gopher wood and covered inside and out with pitch.
The New Living Translation and Holman Christian Standard Bibles convert that to an arc 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high.

NEW YORK (AP) – In the American imagination, suburbs are places to buy a house and put down roots. But a growing percentage of suburbanites rent, according to a new study.

About 29 percent of metropolitan-area suburbanites were renters in 2014, up from 23 percent in 2006, according to a report being released Tuesday by New York University's Furman Center real estate think tank and the bank Capital One.

53. Last Word: Laurelwood Changes, Greensward Aftermath and Broadband Problems -

East Memphis Proper is about to look a lot different. Nordstrom Rack is opening a Memphis store and it will be built where the Sears store stands now in the Laurelwood shopping center.
Sears closes in mid-April and the 1958 structure will be demolished for a new retail center to be called Poplar Commons.
Nordstrom Rack is 33,000 square feet of a 135,000 square foot shopping center.
Out parcels tend to be the changing face of commercial development on Poplar Avenue.
There are some notable exceptions like the nearby Oak Court Mall which was a significant change of scenery from what was once the Siena College campus.
Further west on Poplar, the Poplar Plaza shopping center – the city’s first suburban shopping center – is still recognizable in its original form if you know what used to be there.

55. Last Word: The First Surrogate, Parkside at Shelby Farms and Manilow Memories -

Here they come, fresh from Iowa and New Hampshire – first the surrogates and in the next two weeks the Presidential contenders themselves.

The nation’s “first surrogate” – former President Bill Clinton is at Whitehaven High School Thursday evening to rally early voters in the heart of a large reliably Democratic middle class community.
And it is that voter base that was integral to Barack Obama carrying Shelby County in the 2008 Democratic Presidential primary even as Hillary Clinton carried the state that year.
As mentioned here Tuesday, the local Bernie Sanders campaign opens its Memphis HQ over the weekend.
Hillary Clinton headquarters in Memphis and Nashville are on the way soon with the Nashville HQ opening Thursday as the former President is in Whitehaven and the candidate is preparing for another television debate Thursday in Milwaukee with Sanders.
And early voting opened Downtown Wednesday.
The first day's turnout Wednesday was 177 early and absentee voters. Combined with another 645 absentee votes cast before the early voting period, that makes 822 early or absentee votes.
Another Republican contender on the ballot in Tennessee is out of the race. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie dropped out the day after his dismal finish in New Hampshire. He did not have a slate of delegates on the ballot here.

63. Last Word: Secrets In A Small Town, Bullard Bounce and Beale & Mud Island -

Munford! A winning Powerball ticket for the largest jackpot ever was sold in Munford and that warrants a rare exclamation mark.
Possibly two when you consider that small towns are supposed to be places where it is nearly impossible to keep a secret – at least from the other folks in the town.
The fact that it was sold at Naifeh’s, a long-standing Tipton County business institution adds to the story.
The person who bought the ticket in Munford holds one of three winning tickets which comes out to about $582 million for that ticket.
That is roughly the size of the city of Memphis operating budget.
There was a similar mystery underway Thursday in Dyersburg where someone bought a Powerball ticket worth a paltry $2 million. Probably worth an exclamation mark if I wasn’t over the limit and already feeling the unspoken disdain of my reporting brethren who are judging me harshly as you read this.

64. 4 Applicants Up for Beale Street Gig -

A Fortune 500 corporation, the Memphis-based company behind the Delta Fair, a Memphis real estate management firm with office experience, and a newly formed group of Memphians with experience in real estate, entertainment and restaurants as well as commercial development and financing. Those are the four companies that have applied to manage the Beale Street entertainment district.

The day after the last State of the Union address by President Barack Obama here's a breakdown of the reaction from our delegation to Washington.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen emphasized Obama's references to criminal justice reform.
"I know he is also committed to criminal justice reform and I hope my colleagues will work together to put meaningful reform on his desk," Cohen said.
Republican U.S. Rep. Stephen Fincher tweeted, "We need a plan to keep America safe and make America strong. I did not hear that from the President tonight."
Republican U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander: "If Pres. Obama focuses on what he agrees on with Congress instead of what we disagree on, there's quite a bit we could get done in 2016."

The Shelby County mortgage market had a strong 2015, and lenders expect the momentum to continue for the foreseeable future.

Among loans made at the time of purchase, banks and mortgage lenders made 9,368 mortgages in Shelby County during 2015, up 11 percent from the 8,470 mortgages during 2014, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, chandlerreports.com.

The open field between Third and Seventh streets, south of Cedar Avenue in north Memphis, is surrounded by homes – some that have seen better days and others that are newly built.

Now after more than a decade of building homes on scattered sites one or two at a time, the local Habitat for Humanity chapter this summer will build its first Uptown subdivision. And the community will take the name of a section of North Memphis remembered by long-time residents.

International Paper Reports Q2 Earnings Growth: International Paper reports its second-quarter net earnings grew while net sales for the quarter decreased slightly.

The Memphis-based company, which released its quarterly financial results Wednesday, July 29, said second-quarter earnings totaled $227 million, or 54 cents per share. That’s up from $161 million, or 37 cents per share, in second quarter 2014, but down from $313 million, or 74 cents per share, in first quarter 2015.
