1. Midtown Five Guys Property Sells for $950K -

The Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant property on Union Avenue in Midtown has been sold for $950,000.

The Caruthers Group LLC sold the restaurant property at 2100 Union Ave. to a partnership including Gary E. Goodman and Sylvia Cossich Goodman of the Goodman Family Trust, Judy L. Vann of the July L. Vann Living Trust and Wayne Jon Stambler, according to Jan. 28 warranty deed.

3. Midtown Five Guys Property Sells for $950,000 -

4. Reappraisal to Impact Office Market -

For the first time in history, the property value of the once-every-four-year reappraisal is going down, and it has some commercial real estate property owners concerned.

Although how much the value decreases won’t be official until April 20, the first formal notices of 2013 Shelby County property values for taxation purposes were mailed at the beginning of this month to owners of commercial and industrial cost properties.

5. Bar Louie, Chiwawa File Business Licenses -

Two long-awaited Madison Avenue restaurants have filed for business licenses with the Shelby County Clerk’s Office.

Memphis Louie LLC applied for its Bar Louie location at 2125 Madison in Overton Square, the Midtown district being redeveloped by Loeb Properties Inc. The Addison, Texas-based franchise will occupy 5,982 square feet of the curved building on the southwest corner of Madison and Cooper Street. The space originally housed Playhouse on the Square in the 1970s.

6. Loeb: City Should Increase Investment in Urban Core -

The relevance of Overton Square is that it’s one of many initiatives the city has in place to make Memphis a better place and a city of choice for the millennial generation.

Seventy-seven percent of those born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s want to live in the urban core and to drive less.

7. Midtown Momentum -

The Midtown real estate market has long been an anomaly compared to its Bluff City counterparts, with fundamentals as diverse as its demographics.

“The types of real estate that you’ll find in Midtown can be some of the most expensive or some of the most modest when it comes to prices and facility,” said Gary Myers of Gary Myers Co. “Retail in particular.”

8. Work Moves Forward on Midtown’s Chiwawa -

Plans are moving forward for Chiwawa, a Southern-inspired Mexican restaurant near Overton Square in Midtown that hopes to open this fall.

A $347,257 permit was recently filed for Chiwawa’s renovations of the two-story, 3,196-square-foot building at 2059 Madison Ave. The space housed Chicago Pizza Factory in the 1980s and has been vacant since.

9. Lawsuit Filed Contesting Millington Referendum Results -

The second legal challenge of the Aug. 2 election results was filed Friday, Aug. 24. in Shelby County Chancery Court.

Millington Mayor Linda Carter, alderman Michael Caruthers and Douglas Dakin, the chairman of the pro municipal schools group People for the Advancement of Millington Schools are suing the Shelby County Election Commission. Caruthers role as chairman of the Millington Municipal Schools Transition Committee is also noted.

10. Midtown Eateries File Building Permits -

Two Midtown eateries in the greater Overton Square area have filed building permit applications with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

11. Muni Schools Questions Pass, Cohen Wins Big -

Voters in each of the six suburban towns and cities in Shelby County approved establishing municipal school districts in the unofficial results of the Thursday, Aug. 2, county general and state and federal primary elections.

12. Another Round -

The revitalization of Overton Square can perhaps be best summed up with a famous quote often attributed to Mark Twain: “History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.”

The history of the Midtown entertainment district dates back to late 1970, when T.G.I. Friday’s opened its first franchised location on Madison Avenue near Cooper Street following the passage of a referendum vote allowing liquor by the drink citywide a year prior.

14. Millington Candidates File for August Election -

The field for Millington mayor in that city’s Aug. 2 nonpartisan general election is three candidates following last week’s filing deadline.

It includes former Mayor Terry Jones, who lost a re-election bid four years ago to Richard Hodges; Kenneth Uselton and Debra Sigee.

15. Cohen-Hart in Congressional Race at Filing Deadline -

The chairman of the countywide school board, Billy Orgel, was effectively elected to his District 7 school board seat without opposition at the Thursday, April 5, filing deadline for candidates on the Aug. 2 primary and general election ballot in Shelby County.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries has inked its second Memphis-area lease – this one in Bartlett – and is close to solidifying two other locations, including one in Midtown.

Jubilee Restaurant Group LLC, owner of the Memphis franchise, has signed a 3,100-square-foot lease in Stage Centre. Five Guys is taking the subdivided end-cap of the 6,660-square-foot space formerly occupied by Blockbuster Video.

22. Advanced Disposal Acquires All Star Waste Systems -

Advanced Disposal Services of Jacksonville, Fla., has completed its acquisition of Memphis-based All Star Waste Systems LLC.

The acquisition gives the company another marketplace in the Southeast to do business. All Star Waste Systems provides solid waste hauling, recycling and disposal services to more than 61,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the Memphis area. Advanced Disposal plans to continue providing those services and grow the company’s customer base here, the company said.
