Tennessee football fans are hoping for a better National Signing Day in 2019. This year’s was a relative dud.

New coach Jeremy Pruitt, hired on Dec. 7, signed six players on Feb. 7 but whiffed on several high-profile recruits he and his staff were pursuing. He had signed 14 players during the first-ever early signing period Dec. 20-22.

About a month ago, following a Dec. 10 loss at Arizona, Marcus Mariota showed a seldom-seen side of his personality.

Clearly dejected, he seemed flustered and distraught while answering questions in his post-game press conference, even answering that he was “pissed off” about his performance when asked why he seemed more bothered than usual following the Titans’ 12-7 loss to the struggling Cardinals.

It had been festering for weeks, but the Tennessee Titans seemed to push the matter aside as they were squeezing out close wins against the NFL’s third-easiest schedule.

George, Frank and Whit played at the University of Tennessee while Justin, Billy and Conn played at Mississippi State. 15. Better Titans Doing Nothing for Whisenhunt’s Record -

The whispers are already out there. How much job security does Ken Whisenhunt really have with the Tennessee Titans?

It seems a little soon for message boards and talk radio to be discussing the ouster of the Titans coach, but such is life in the coaching fish bowl when you lose games that should go into the win column, like the Titans have done in their past two games.

16. AFC South is There for the Taking -

Some team has to win the AFC South. League rules require it, even if no team truly deserves to go to the playoffs.

It was proven last year when the Carolina Panthers won the NFC South with a not-so-tidy 7-8-1 record, a mark that required four consecutive wins to reach.

University of Memphis senior punter Tom Hornsey won the 2013 Ray Guy Award Thursday, Dec. 12, during The Home Depot College Football Awards presented by ESPN.

Hornsey also was named a member of the Walter Camp All-America second team. Hornsey is just the second Tiger to be a Walter Camp All-American. Running back DeAngelo Williams made the team in 2005. Hornsey also was named to USA Today All-America first team.

26. Elliot Perry to Discuss Art Collection -

Former University of Memphis point guard Elliot Perry will participate in a discussion of African-American art as part of a celebration of Black History Month at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

28. YMCA Announces Board Members -

YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South has installed its 2012 metropolitan board of directors.

Sandra Bailey of Methodist Extended Care Hospital will serve as board chair; Ted Ferris of the Greater Memphis Chamber will serve as secretary; and Perry Green of Waddell and Associates Inc. will serve as treasurer.

29. SBA Honors Graduates of e200 Program -

The U.S. Small Business Administration recently honored new graduates of its Emerging 200 Initiative, or e200, at a ceremony at Southwest Tennessee Community College.

SBA identified 14 inner-city businesses from Memphis that demonstrated a high potential for growth. The agency then provided the small businesses with a free, six-month course of in-depth business education focused on organization management, growth strategies and management, market development and strategic planning.

The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis has named new members to its 2011-2012 board of directors.

They are Meri Armour, president and CEO, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital; Toni L. 31. SCO’s Steele Receives Optometry Recognition -

Dr. Glen T. Steele, a professor at the Southern College of Optometry, has received the prestigious William Feinbloom Award from the American Academy of Optometry for his work with InfantSEE.

32. Wharton, Fullilove & Conrad Re-Elected -- Harris-Ford to Runoff - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. won a full four-year term of office as mayor Thursday, Oct. 6, two years after he claimed the mayor’s office in a special election.

And all 12 of the Memphis City Council members seeking re-election won new four year terms in the city election cycle, marking the largest return of incumbents to the 13-member council in the 43-year history of the mayor-council form of government.

33. Fisk Alumni Conference Runs Friday to Sunday -

The Memphis Fisk Alumni Club, in conjunction with the General Alumni Association of Fisk University Inc., will host the General Alumni Association’s Southern Regional Conference Friday, Sept. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 18, at The Peabody hotel, 149 Union Ave.

45. U of M’s Preza Receives $740K Award for Research -

Dr. Chrysanthe Preza has received a more than $740,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award for her research to improve live cell imaging. Preza is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering.

The board of trustees of Memphis Theological Seminary installed Dr. Barbara A. Holmes as vice president of academic affairs/dean of the seminary.
