The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority will vote to award an engineering contract for the redesign of the Terminal B checkpoint to a joint venture between The Horrell Group Architects and Self Tucker Architects Inc. at today’s March board of commissioners meeting.

The signs aren’t up yet, but construction is complete on Smith & Nephew’s new global distribution center at the intersection of Tchulahoma and Holmes roads.

The medical device company could move operations from the old center on Delp Street into the $25 million structure before the end of the year.

18. In Step with Biotech -

A plan proposed by Gov. Phil Bredesen in September to increase Tennessee's high school graduation rate could shine light on something that's been going on in Memphis for some time.

Bredesen's plan would offer free tuition to high school graduates who attend two-year community colleges, helping them get jobs that range in pay from $25,000 to $30,000 almost immediately after they graduate. The governor's plan would add much-needed tuition funding to a program that was implemented in 1997 at State Technical Institute at Memphis, now Southwest Tennessee Community College.

19. Smith & Nephew Shuffles Divisions, Leaders -

Smith & Nephew is changing its local corporate form and its senior management in an effort to keep growing in the highly competitive biomedical field.

The company is splitting its Memphis-based orthopedics division at 1450 Brooks Road into two business units, company spokesman Victor Rocha said. One new division will cover orthopedic reconstruction; the other will cover trauma and clinical therapies. Before the restructuring, Smith & Nephew's three overall business units were orthopedics, endoscopy and advanced wound management.
