They made music that inspired legions of fans. Rock 'n' roll founding fathers Chuck Berry and Fats Domino, rockers Tom Petty and Gregg Allman, grunge icon Chris Cornell, country superstar Glen Campbell and jazz great Al Jarreau were among the notable figures who died in 2017, leaving a void in virtually every genre of music.

2. Last Word: Overton Park's Restless Winter, Across The Harahan and Higher Ed -

It may be chilly outside, but it might as well be July on the Overton Park greensward with all of the political heat that is building.
The thermometer spiked when more than two dozen trees donated to the Overton Park Conservancy in 2012 were removed this week by the Memphis Zoo which is preparing for large crowds in March.
That’s when its new Zambezi Hippo River Camp exhibit opens to much anticipation and much fanfare.
That and the New Year’s Eve legal opinion favoring the zoo’s position on its use of the greensward for overflow parking set the stage for a dispute the administration of Mayor Jim Strickland has had to mediate at less than two weeks in office.

3. Southaven Police Sued Over Concert Death -

The widow of a man who died in police custody in July after being hogtied by Southaven police has filed a lawsuit against the Southaven Police Department, Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto and attending medical personnel.

4. Prosecutor: Police Misconduct In Man’s Death Unlikely -

A Mississippi prosecutor says the case involving the death of a Tennessee man hours after police detained him remains open pending final autopsy and toxicology results, but that he doesn’t have reason to believe officers did anything criminally wrong.

5. Stewart, Goode Deaths Test Memphis, Southaven Police -

Darrius Stewart and Troy Goode died a day apart on different sides of the state line while both were in police custody.

Local gas distributor nexAir hopes a $1.5 million capital investment in a new hydrogen plant will significantly reduce its production costs, while also repositioning the company to emerge from a bad economy.
