4. Miles Never Fully Escaped Shadow of Saban -

The early in-season firing is much more typical in the NBA or baseball than it is college football, but LSU punted on Les Miles after a 2-2 start and last week’s 18-13 loss to Auburn that included some horrific clock management.

5. Rudd + Bowen + Pastner = PR Nightmare at Memphis -

You keep thinking the story can’t get worse, and then it does. What we have here is an ongoing public relations disaster that is the University of Memphis athletic department as it pertains to all matters regarding the men’s basketball program.

6. Nichols’ Exit a Sign of Where Tigers Basketball is Now -

University of Memphis Basketball Past is strong and vibrant.

We saw evidence last month when a couple of former players hastily threw together an alumni game and it sold out, Elma Roane Fieldhouse packed for a no-count exhibition as Penny Hardaway turned back the clock and Chris Crawford rained 3-pointers.

7. Stones Rock Music City -

Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed our name. Well, hell, Mick, if it’s puzzling you, it’s Nashville. Music City USA.

We’re the national media’s flavor of the day – the “It city,” which has gone from being a secondary concert market – remember The Beatles played Memphis, not Nashville – to one of the country’s prime touring destinations.

8. Tigers’ Season Starts as a Hoops Nightmare -

The comments on Twitter during the Memphis Tigers’ dreadful season debut against No. 11 Wichita State were shallow, cynical and, yes, spot-on.

“So when Cal coined the term, ‘The Miserables,’ he meant this year’s guards?” tweeted one wiseguy.

9. Stepherson Named Chair-Elect of Grocers Association -

Randy Stepherson has been named 2014-2015 chairman-elect of the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association board of directors. Stepherson is president of Stepherson Inc., the family- and employee-owned parent company of Superlo Foods, which has five Memphis-area locations, and Stepherson’s.

10. Justice is Blind, But Voters Shouldn't Be Blindfolded -

Before heading to the polls for the Aug. 3 election, it might be wise to make a quick stop by any party supply store for a blindfold.

You won't be taking a turn at whacking a piñata, and you won't need it for a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Unless you've spent much time around the 73 candidates for judicial positions in Shelby County, wearing that blindfold while voting might be your only alternative.

11. Sun Records Owner Entertains Prospects -

Shelby Singleton has been talking to a colorful cast of characters about selling the Sun Records label he bought in 1969.

Singleton is chairman of Sun Entertainment Holding Corp., the Nashville company that owns the Sun logo and master recordings of such musicians as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. He was a record producer himself before buying the Memphis label and its catalog from Sam Phillips.
