1. Enthusiastic Fans Embrace City’s New Soccer Team -

How’s this for a 9-01 day? At 9:01 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, Memphis’ expansion United Soccer League franchise rolled out its logo and identity as Memphis 901 FC on social media.

By 12:01 p.m., fans were already snatching up gear in the team’s AutoZone Park store – seven months before 901 FC plays its first game in March.

2. Local Soccer Team Christened Memphis FC 901 -

The Memphis entry in the United Soccer League shall be known as Memphis 901 FC. The logo and team name were unveiled on Saturday, Sept. 1. at 9:01 a.m., a nod to the city’s area code. An accompanying video talks about the city’s legacy in the sport with shots of the Memphis Americans indoor team and the outside squad – Memphis Rogues.

The 2018 Delta Fair & Music Festival runs Friday, Aug. 31, through Sept. 9 at Agricenter International, 7777 Walnut Grove Road. 4. Kick in the Grass -

Mentally, the ownership group bringing a United Soccer League team to share AutoZone Park with the Memphis Redbirds has been flipping the switch for the better part of two years. After the last out of the Redbirds regular-season home finale was recorded Monday, the act got physical. The concept became real.

Good morning, Memphis! When the calendar turns to September on Saturday, it becomes all things 901 for Memphians. Saturday also marks the first professional soccer game to be held in Memphis and the season opener for the University of Memphis Tigers.

Let’s get the hard part out of the way first, the thing that might make you resistant to welcoming your first USL Memphis head coach. Tim Mulqueen is a rabid New York Knicks fan. Yes, the same team that now employs former Grizzlies coach David Fizdale.

9. Team Name for USL Memphis, First Soccer Match a Month Away -

USL Memphis sporting director Andrew Bell is sworn to secrecy about the team’s logo, name and colors, but this much he will reveal: They’re not going to hurt merchandise sales.

Peter Freund is a baseball guy. Grew up on the New York Yankees. Today, not only is he principal owner of the Memphis Redbirds, he owns stakes in other minor league teams through his Trinity Baseball Holdings and even has a small slice of the Yankees. But make no mistake, he is a businessman. And it was the businessman in him that was convinced to bring a United Soccer League (USL) team to Memphis and AutoZone Park for the 2019 season.

So much going on off the field and on parts of the field in Atlanta Monday evening as Alabama beat Georgia – a clothesline, a punch thrown on the field and an attempt to throw another punch on the sidelines at an Alabama coach and all of that from a single Alabama player. So a lot of speculation after the College Football Playoff National Championship about how that will be resolved. Alabama over Georgia 26-23 in overtime.

Turns out, Marc Gasol was wrong.

“I don’t think LeBron is coming through that door anytime soon,” Gasol said after the end of last season.

But in fact LeBron James, albeit wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform, will come through the doors at FedExForum for the 2015-16 season opener on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The Memphis Bar Association poll of attorneys on the judicial races on the Aug. 7 ballot shows 16 percent to as high as 38 percent of the attorneys participating have no opinion in many of the judicial races.

NEW YORK (AP) – These are the kinds of negotiations NBA fans have been waiting for.

Teams began talking to agents Wednesday as the lockout inched closer to its end, and basketball moved back into focus. Dwight Howard and Chris Paul were linked to trade speculation, while free agents such as Tyson Chandler and Nene were in the news after months of attorneys getting all the ink.

NEW YORK (AP) – Two years at the bargaining table led nowhere, so NBA players are ready to take their chances in a courtroom.

The players' association rejected the league's latest proposal for a new labor deal Monday and began disbanding, paving the way for a lawsuit that throws the season into jeopardy.

35. Tenn.’s Duncan Among Congressmen Suing Obama Over Libya Strikes -

WASHINGTON (AP) – A bipartisan group of 10 lawmakers is suing President Barack Obama for taking military action against Libya without war authorization from Congress.

Among the lawmakers is U.S. Rep. Jimmy Duncan, R-Tenn., who represents Tennessee’s Second District: Knox, Blount, Loudon, Monroe and McMinn counties, as well as a potion of Sevier County.

36. Starbucks: 4th-Quarter Net Income Nearly Doubles -

NEW YORK (AP) – As more people visited Starbucks cafes and spent more at the end of summer, the company's fourth-quarter net income nearly doubled, handily beating estimates, and the company raised its target Thursday for fiscal 2011 profit.

37. Some GOP Candidates to Skip Fundraiser Over Cost -

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - Some Republican candidates in Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District race say they plan to skip a Saturday GOP fundraiser after they were hit with a demand to pay $2,000 for the right to speak there.

38. Area Banks Could Accept Federal Help -

Community bankers in the Memphis area as well as throughout Tennessee could be changing their minds about the merits of accepting injections of capital from the U.S. Treasury Department.

About a month ago, Treasury officials sat the heads of nine large U.S. banks – including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup – down around a table and all but forced them to collectively accept $125 billion as part of a broad strategy to shore up the economy by directly injecting capital into banks to encourage them to lend money. Regional players such as SunTrust and Memphis-based First Horizon National Corp. later stepped up and applied for the federal cash as well.

39. Democrats Head for Bigger House Majority -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Democrats reached for a blowout at the polls Tuesday in heavy early congressional balloting that could add more than 20 seats to their House majority.

Long lines formed as polls opened before daybreak in about a dozen Eastern seaboard states. Democrats were counting on heavy turnouts to capture more than 15 GOP seats, and they had a good chance to wrest away another two dozen seats. Republicans had fewer than a dozen Democratic targets they had any hope of defeating.

NASHVILLE (AP) - Fred Thompson became the latest Tennessee Republican who couldn't translate statewide support into national success when he withdrew from the presidential race on Tuesday.

Supporters blamed the former Tennessee senator's late start and a crowded field for failed bid. Others said Republican primary voters misinterpreted his laid-back demeanor for lack of conviction.

43. Butler Snow's Holbrook Certified as Civil Trial Specialist -

Frank M. Holbrook, an attorney with Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada PLLC, has been certified as a civil trial specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Holbrook is a member of the Commercial Litigation Group in the firm's Memphis office. He is also a member of the Litigation Counsel of America and was named a Mid-South Super Lawyer in business litigation.

Once Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson filed the first financial report due from the committee managing his possible 2008 bid last week, media coverage immediately focused on his total haul.

Over the course of former Memphian Jason Miccolo Johnson's award-winning photographic career, he's captured icons such as Princess Diana and five of the last six U.S. presidents.

He scored a rare session to photograph the late Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, and another photo assignment carried him to Selma, Ala., where he walked across the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge.
