9. Lawsuit: Tennessee Driver's License Law Punishes Poor -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Justice reform groups are challenging a Tennessee law they say unfairly punishes the poor by revoking driver's licenses due to unpaid court fines.

The National Center for Law and Economic Justice and other groups filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Nashville federal court against Gov. Bill Haslam, Attorney General Herbert Slatery and other state officials, The Tennessean reported (http://tnne.ws/2hYEYPd).

10. Why is It So Difficult for Tennessee To Oust Indicted Politicians? -

Tennessee is lagging much of the nation when it comes to the ability to remove scoundrels from public office.

And, make no mistake, the Volunteer State has had its fair share of ne’er-do-well politicians who would likely have been thrown out of office if the proper procedures had been in place.

Heidi Scartozzi has joined the Hilton Memphis, managed by Davidson Hotels & Resorts, as director of sales. Scartozzi is a 15-year hospitality veteran, most recently serving as a regional director of sales for JQH Hotels and Resorts, servicing 13 hotels on the West Coast.

22. Sesley-Baymon Named CEO of Memphis Urban League -

Tonja Sesley-Baymon has been appointed president and CEO of the Memphis Urban League by its board of directors. Sesley-Baymon, who has worked with the league for eight years, previously served as programs director for the 70-year-old organization. In her new role, she will provide executive leadership to the league and advocate on behalf of social justice and economic issues affecting Memphis.

The Tennessee attorney general is defending a state law that caps damages in civil cases in a lawsuit filed by the husband of a Brentwood woman who died after getting fungal meningitis from tainted steroid injections.

The law firm of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC has won the mergers and acquisitions “deal of the year” award in the $50 million to $100 million category from M&A Advisors.

The deal for which Bass Berry won the award was announced earlier this year. It involved Luminex Corp. – a health care and life sciences research company – acquiring privately held GenturaDx, a molecular diagnostics company focused on making nucleic acid testing affordable and practical for any lab.

ABERDEEN, Miss. (AP) - Bobby DeLaughter, a history-making prosecutor who became a judge, was sentenced Friday to 18 months for federal obstruction in a case that ended his career and brought down some of the most powerful lawyers in Mississippi.

29. Blockbuster, Franchisee Suit Moves to Mediation -

A Hollywood ending may be in store for a nearly two-year-old federal lawsuit filed in Memphis that deals with issues surrounding the growth of Blockbuster’s video rental empire.

The breach of contract lawsuit filed against Blockbuster Inc. by Southern Stores Video Inc. – the franchise ownership group for Blockbuster stores in Shelby County – is headed toward mediation, according to the court docket in the case. The suit was filed in September 2006 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, according to The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

30. Unregistered Credit Repair Companies Ordered to Stop -

NASHVILLE (AP) - An Atlanta man offering credit repair services in Nashville and Memphis has been ordered to stop and refund customers.

A Davidson County Circuit Court judge ordered a default judgment against Anthony "Tony" Thomas after he failed to respond to the state's complaint filed in November. Neither Thomas nor counsel appeared at the hearing.

31. Peeples Promoted to Administrator At Methodist Alliance Health Services -

Trip Peeples has been promoted to administrator for Methodist Alliance Health Services' Home Medical Equipment and Infusion division.

Peeples has been with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare for seven years, most recently serving as corporate director of finance and reimbursement and interim chief financial officer for Methodist Extended Care Hospital.

NASHVILLE (AP) - The state Judicial Selection Commission will meet later this month to discuss filling the state Court of Appeals vacancy created when Judge William Koch was named to the Supreme Court.

Dr. Dava F. Gerard has been appointed administrator for the Methodist Healthcare Cancer Center. She previously was the founding vice president and chief operating officer of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas.
