1. Strickland Names 26 to Eight Transition Committees -

Memphis Mayor-elect Jim Strickland announced Wednesday, Oct. 21, that he has named 26 people to eight committees that are the structure of his transition committee.

The transition committee members were chosen by Strickland along with the three co-chairs of the transition committee.

Three business and community leaders are set to lead Memphis Mayor-elect Jim Strickland’s transition team in the 10-week run-up to when he takes office.

Strickland announced Wednesday, Oct. 14, that the co-chairs of the transition team will be Rosie Phillips Bingham, vice president of student affairs at the University of Memphis; Emily Greer, chief administrative officer of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; and Mitch Graves, CEO of HealthChoice LLC.

6. Lowery Installed as President of Association for Women Attorneys -

Keating Lowery has been installed as the 2015 president of the Association for Women Attorneys. As an attorney with Lawrence & Russell PLC, Lowery devotes her practice to litigating Employee Retirement Income Security Act matters on behalf of employers, plan fiduciaries and third-party administrators throughout the United States.

7. University of Memphis Plans New Recreation Center -

The University of Memphis Student Government Association has approved a fee increase to fund construction of a new student recreation and fitness center.

The 192,500-square-foot center will be along Southern Avenue north of the existing center. Construction will be done in three phases, with the center scheduled to open in 2018. The $62 million center will be funded by a student fee increase of $307 for the 2014-2015 school year.

9. Rhodes Honors Gray for Outstanding Research -

Dr. Patrick Gray, an associate professor in Rhodes College’s department of religious studies, has received the college’s Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research. Gray’s research centers on biblical studies, specifically the history and literature of early Christianity and the Greco-Roman context.

10. Tribute Symposium Honors Six Local Women -

The Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis paid tribute to six local women at a sold-out luncheon of more than 1,600 attendees on Friday, April 26.

The Legends Awards honor women whose work embodies the mission of the foundation – to support women and children throughout Shelby County.

11. U of M Adds Iconic Symbols to Campus -

As workers began adding the platforms to the Beale Street Landing project on the city’s riverfront over the weekend, on the other end of the riverfront, workers prepared to move the Ramesses statue from the front of The Pyramid.
