The week of MLK50 commemorations began Monday with a speech by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the arrival Monday afternoon of Rev. Bernice King, the youngest child of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Meanwhile, Monday's day of free admission to the museum, underwritten by FedEx drew a long line. It also drew some remote trepidation that tends to make the situation seem worse than it is once you actually go there for yourself.

2006: Shelby County’s reliance on manufacturing jobs is dropping, according to state labor figures, which show that 14 manufacturing companies have closed or cut back their workforces in Shelby County since January 2003. The closings and cutbacks account for the loss of 1,240 jobs.
The losses include 98 jobs at Coors Brewing Co., 5151 East Raines Road; 112 workers at Memphis Hardwood Flooring Co., 1551 Thomas St.; and 327 employees at Great Dane LP at 1095 Harbor Ave.

27. Olive Branch Business Park Closer to Development -

A Texas-based development firm could start turning dirt soon on a massive new business park in Olive Branch.

Hillwood Investment Properties is expected to close on a land purchase next week that will clear the way for Legacy Park, a 265-acre distribution and business park on the south side of Goodman Road, just east of Hacks Cross Road near Polk Lane.

28. ‘Swamp Rat’ Remembers Last Tennessee-Oklahoma Game -

University of Tennessee quarterback Dewey “Swamp Rat” Warren stood on the field during a timeout with a few seconds left in the Jan. 1, 1968 Orange Bowl.

Warren was the holder for UT place-kicker Karl Kremser, who lined up for a 43-yard field goal attempt against Oklahoma. The Sooners led, 26-24.

A venerable shopping center in East Memphis could be getting a significant makeover, according to a recent retail market report from CB Richard Ellis Memphis.

Eastgate Center LLC, the owner of Eastgate Shopping Center at Park Avenue and White Station Road in East Memphis, could make significant aesthetic improvements to the retail center beginning this year.

30. Lakecrest II Sells for $4.6 Million -

The Lakecrest II office building in East Memphis has changed hands again.

Southland Primacy LLC acquired the 129,104-square-foot office building at 6055 Primacy Parkway from Jefferson-Pilot Investments Inc. Feb. 28 for $4.6 million.

Dunavant Transportation Group recently completed the acquisition of the Houston and Dallas operations of Transportation Consultants Inc., a New Orleans-based third-party logistics provider founded in 1983.

36. J-Line Pump Growing in Collierville -

A local pumping equipment manufacturer is increasing its presence in the Collierville market. 

J-Line Pump Co., doing business as American-Marsh Pumps, bought the 81,260-square-foot warehouse on 12.4 acres at 550 E. South St. for $1.4 million. This will be in addition to the adjoining 110,000-square-foot warehouse at 185 Progress Road the company has occupied since 1999.

37. Archer-Malmo Grows Again With Lease Expansion -

Archer-malmo has inked an additional 3,000 square feet in the Cotton Exchange Building, bringing its total footprint in the historic 12-story Downtown tower to 41,277 square feet across six floors.

With most of the harvest done in Tennessee, farmers are lamenting the loss of corn but say timely rains that began midsummer saved most other crops.

Cotton is expected to finish among the best per-acre yields ever.

41. Obama Carries Shelby, Cohen Over Flinn and Two Tax Hikes Defeated -

President Barack Obama carried Shelby County in unofficial Nov. 6 election returns as his Republican challenger Mitt Romney took the state’s 11 electoral votes.

Voter turnout in the most popular election cycle among Shelby County voters was 61.9 percent, about the same percentage as four years ago. But the 371,256 voters is fewer than 2008 when more than 400,000 Shelby County voters cast ballots. The percentage is about the same because there are fewer registered voters in Shelby County than there were four years ago after a purge by election officials.

43. Midtown Utopia -

Of Memphis’ tales of humble beginnings, of which there are many, the fluctuating renaissance of the Cooper-Young neighborhood is certainly compelling throughout.

The area has cycled from its 19th century roots to 1970s crime and neglect to its present-day status as one of the largest historic districts in the Southeast, a magnet of all ages and walks of life. All thanks to individuals and organizations that wouldn’t settle for sub-par quality in their tiny town within the bustling Bluff City.

Duncan Aiken has loved pizza his whole life, though pizza, as he has found out, can be a harsh mistress. It took years to develop a recipe for the kind of crust he favors, years of studying, traveling, working and, of course, eating.

46. Dodging the Deluge -

The last time the Memphis river gauge was this high, Memphis was a much different place. In 1937 when the Mississippi River at Memphis topped 48.7 feet, Mud Island was really an island with no levee connecting it to the city and the Wolf River flowing between it and the city proper. Parts of the city were still rural as was the county outside Memphis. Today’s suburban development was a long way off, and Millington was still a few years away from getting the Naval Air Station.

47. Wood Honored As Theater’s ‘Superior Volunteer’ -

Bennett Wood made his acting debut as a second-grader playing George Washington in a historical pageant.

Today, Wood can be found on the big screen, the small screen and on stage at Theatre Memphis, and his work there has earned him the Robert E. Gard Superior Volunteer Award from the American Association of Community Theatre.

48. Conference Pits MEM At Center of Aviation World -

For five years Memphis International Airport executives and other civic leaders have worked on developing the city’s aerotropolis – the concept of an airport serving as a region’s economic engine.

The idea will be as public as ever – at least here – Tuesday, the second day of the Airport Cities World Conference & Exhibition at The Peabody hotel. That’s when FedEx Corp. founder Frederick W. Smith and Delta Air Lines Inc. CEO Richard Anderson share the stage with University of North Carolina professor John Kasarda, the originator of the aerotropolis concept.

49. Slow Start to Spring Projected for Retailers -

NEW YORK (AP) – A late Easter, lingering cold weather and rising gas prices are squeezing discretionary spending this spring, according to data being released Wednesday.

Figures from MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse show sales growth slowed in some categories last month. But consumers spent more on clothing – and most other items from electronics to luxury goods – than they did in March 2010.

Opening Day is right around the corner for the Memphis Redbirds, who will open the 2011 campaign with improvements to both its ballpark and its financial outlook.

The Redbirds, the minor league Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, on Thursday begin their 14th season in Memphis and 12th at AutoZone Park following the move from Tim McCarver Stadium in 2000.

Raleigh, N.C.-based Highwoods Properties Inc. has signed two deals at its Southwind Office Center, a 62,000-square foot, three-story building with views of the Tournament Players Club at Southwind golf course.

Dunavant Enterprises Inc. has formally announced the expansion of its global logistics division as the new main active concentration for the company, which for more than 50 years has been known as one of the world’s largest cotton merchants.

56. Italian Eatery to Take Over Dish’s Cooper-Young Site -

Italian is coming to the intersection of Cooper and Young.

Chef David Cleveland, in Memphis since 1997, and veteran front-of-the-house manager Leslie Billman will open Cortona – they hope by the beginning of 2011 – in the space where Dish closed Jan. 31.

Industrial real estate, which thrives whenever companies choose one of the city’s numerous warehouses and distribution centers to store their goods, plays a significant role in Memphis’ economy.

So as the recession improves and consumerism rebounds, the industrial sector is bound to show improvement as will the city’s financial climate.

59. Negative Absorption Dings Market -

The strength of Memphis’ commercial real estate market is its industrial sector, but the city’s bread and butter suffered a rare misstep in 2009, the most recent data show.

Memphis saw negative absorption of 352,797 square feet during the fourth quarter and negative absorption of 913,871 during 2009, according to a year-end report from CB Richard Ellis.

61. Dunavant Subsidiary Joins Ranks Of Green Logistics Firms -

A Memphis-based third-party logistics firm has turned a rebranding campaign into a way to reinvent the way it does business.

Centrix Logistics, a wholly owned subsidiary of cotton company Dunavant Enterprises Inc., has joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the transportation industry to increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions along the global supply chain.

64. Chicago Company Buys Again In Memphis -

A Chicago real estate firm has bolstered its Memphis presence with another industrial acquisition, its fourth high-dollar deal in the past couple of years.

HSA Commercial Real Estate, operating locally as Memphis Air Trans LP, has bought the 342,860-square-foot, one-story warehouse at 4219 Air Trans Road for $8.4 million, proving that it remains bullish on this market.

65. Developers Bring Apartments to Condo-Rich Downtown -

With recent announcements of plans to rehab two historic properties, two development teams have signed on to give Downtown something it's been thirsting for - apartments.

Development groups called 91 Cotton Row LLC and Downtown Developers LLC have joined a growing list of groups bringing multifamily product to a submarket that many believe is oversaturated with condominiums and underserved by apartments.

66. Berclair Animal Hospital Continues Renovations to New Downtown Facility -

For the past five months, the racket at 668 S. Main St. has been made by construction crews renovating the historic building.

Memphis was a much different place in 1947.
