When the pop-up beer garden event Station 3: The Memphis Fire Haus makes its debut at the corner of Third Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in October, it will be a showcase for a property that has sat vacant since its arena neighbor opened in 2004.

This past April and May, Benjamin Orgel and partners Paul Stephens, Logan Scheidt and Central BBQ’s J.C. Youngblood united for Tennessee Brewery: The Revival, opening a pop-up beer garden at the site of the old Tennessee Brewery, 495 Tennessee Street.

10. Beer Revived -

Revive the beer garden, and they will come. If the soft opening held on Tuesday night, April 7, was any indication, then Tennessee Brewery: The Revival will have a nice run this spring.

Taking advantage of warm temperatures, patrons packed the pop-up beer garden at the recently purchased Tennessee Brewery at 495 Tennessee St. Among those milling about: Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, city councilman Myron Lowery, and members of the Grizzlies’ front office.

11. New 'Untapped'-Style Event Coming to Tennessee Brewery -

A version of the popular Tennessee Brewery “Untapped” event appears set to return to the Downtown landmark this spring.

The event last year, which included food trucks, music and a beer garden, helped raise awareness about the iconic structure’s impending demolition, which was avoided with developer Billy Orgel’s plan for a residential development at the site.

The University of Memphis will host its Black History Month opening ceremony and presentation of the Authur S. Holmon Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. James L. Netters Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre, 470 University St. Visit memphis.edu for a schedule of other Black History Month activities.

13. Rockin’ Summer -

Just shy of 40 years after the band Big Star last played at the Overton Park Shell, the short-lived Memphis band is about to have a bigger summer locally than it could have envisioned in 1974.

A long-awaited documentary about what has become the city’s most famous unknown band opens Friday, July 12, in a movie theater at the epicenter of the 1970s Memphis environment the band lived its short life in.

14. Leadership Memphis Announces Board Members -

Leadership Memphis has announced new board members and officers for its new fiscal year.

The officers and executive committee include Eric Robertson, chair; Beverly Jordan, vice chair; Bryan Ford, treasurer; Veronica Coleman Davis, secretary; Chris McLean, immediate past chair; Jeff Gaudino, alumni chair; Christine Munson, development chair; Lemoyne Robinson, program chair; and Jeane Chapman, marketing chair.

The Memphis Central Rotary Club will meet Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at Chickasaw Country Club, 3395 Galloway Ave. Shelby County Election Commissioner Brian Stephens will speak about Rebuild Government. Cost is $25 for guests. For reservations, call Karen Shea at 683-9099.

16. Stephens Named Executive Director Of Exceptional Foundation of West Tenn. -

Jeni Stephens has been named the executive director of the Exceptional Foundation of West Tennessee.

Stephens was appointed following a national search conducted by the EFWT.

She joins the EFWT with a 14-year background in nonprofit administration. She most recently served as deputy director of development for the Pink Palace Family of Museums. She also has served as director of marketing and development for the Memphis Bioworks Foundation and the Memphis Academy of Science in Engineering.

17. Final Candidate List Peopled With Variety -

Unless you know them personally, you’ve probably never heard of most of the candidates running in the Oct. 15 special election for Memphis mayor.

Most of the 25 people show no visible signs of running any kind of campaign.

18. Gallery Owner Prices Art For All Collectors During Downturn -

Sometimes a gesture of goodwill can bring unexpected rewards.

Lulalyn Gallery, Gifts and Interiors owners Kevin Mitchell and Ralph Dixon, along with the artists they represent, donated items to the WKNO Art and Antiques Auction last year and got lucky.

They both are among the 11 candidates who had filed to run in the Nov. 4 special election for a seat on the Memphis City Council.

It looked like Memphis school board member Stephanie Gatewood was on her way to re-election without opposition on the Nov. 4 ballot.

That was until Wednesday (Aug. 27) – the day before the Shelby County Election Commission certified the local portion of the ballot.
