Methodist Healthcare Memphis Hospitals has purchased a 69,280-square-foot building in the Medical District for $3.1 million, according to a Dec. 5 warranty deed.

In the sale, Methodist purchased the Class B office building from the Urban Child Institute, a local nonprofit that moved into a fourth-floor suite in Crosstown Concourse.

Tennessee coaches of all sports were alerted last Thursday when Sam Winterbotham was fired after 11 seasons as the Vols’ men’s tennis coach.

No doubt UT baseball coach Dave Serrano got the alert. He could be next in line.

5. Busiest Season for Sports Hits Big Orange Country -

It’s the busiest time of the year for Tennessee athletics. There’s even some football to whet your gridiron appetite.

The Vols begin spring football practices March 21, and the DISH Orange & White Game is April 22 at Neyland Stadium. By then, much will have happened in Big Orange Nation.

The building that formerly housed Orchard Fellowship Church, located at 140 S. Main St. in Collierville, has been purchased by Chris Dickens and Associates LLC for $500,000.

8. Tanger Outlets Confirms Southaven Involvement -

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers Inc. has confirmed what The Daily News first reported in December: It will play a key role in the development of a massive outlet mall in Southaven.

The original Neely’s Bar-B-Que could be making a comeback if owners can pay off back property taxes.

The Downtown Memphis Commission’s Center City Development Corp. on Wednesday, April 16, approved a $67,500 development loan to bring Neely’s back to 670 Jefferson Ave. if owners pay back taxes on two closed restaurants.

Lauren Bigger has joined preclinical services company TriMetis, a subsidiary of Memphis Bioworks Foundation, as a business development specialist. In her new role, Bigger will work with the operations and scientific teams to drive new projects for the TriMetis specialized laboratory and manage the sales and protocol review processes.

15. Restaurants See Plenty of Activity in 2012 -

There were new restaurant openings, expansions and major milestones celebrated.

Alliances were formed, events were debuted and, of course, a few joints were shuttered.

In most respects, 2012 was a banner year for the Memphis food scene, and 2013 could be even more promising, said Patrick Reilly, owner of Majestic Grille and president of the Memphis Restaurant Association.

16. Georgia 3PL Growing Its Area Footprint -

A Savannah, Ga.-based third-party logistics firm is seeing rapid expansion in the Southeast Memphis industrial market after its local entrance less than a year ago.

Coastal Logistics Group Inc. has signed a 50,000-square-foot lease extension at 5715 Distribution Drive, bringing its Memphis footprint to 100,000 square feet. The company inked its initial 50,000-square-foot warehouse lease in June.

Kimberly Crafton has joined Memphis Goodwill Industries as director of marketing and public relations.

18. Tom Lee Remembered for Heroic Act, Impact on City’s Future -

For a few minutes last week, one of the more complex political discussions in Memphis was put on hold by a simple story from 1925.

The Memphis City Council chambers was filled to near capacity with teachers and parents gathered by Memphis City Schools leaders to protest the council’s decision to cut funding to the system.

19. This Little Piggy Went to Memphis -

Would you open a wing store in Buffalo? How about a brewery in St. Louis? That's pretty much what a Little Rock-based barbecue restaurant is doing here in the Mid-South.

The Whole Hog Café, a barbecue restaurant started by Little Rock-based Whole Hog Enterprises Inc., plans to open a new store in Memphis' saturated barbecue restaurant market June 1 under a licensing agreement with McMay LLC, which will operate the 6,000-square-foot store at 5727 Quince Road.

20. Commercial Advisors' Jensen Voted Commercial Broker of the Year -

Larry Jensen has received the 2005 Pinnacle Award for Commercial Broker of the Year from the Memphis Area Association of Realtors' Commercial Council. Jensen is president and CEO of Commercial Advisors LLC. He has more than 30 years of experience in real estate.
