Vol Nation should celebrate. It’s a new year. It’s got to be better than 2017. Tennessee athletics had a bad year, one of the worst ever. It was rough for fans, alumni and boosters.

2. Busiest Season for Sports Hits Big Orange Country -

It’s the busiest time of the year for Tennessee athletics. There’s even some football to whet your gridiron appetite.

The Vols begin spring football practices March 21, and the DISH Orange & White Game is April 22 at Neyland Stadium. By then, much will have happened in Big Orange Nation.

3. Restaurants See Plenty of Activity in 2012 -

There were new restaurant openings, expansions and major milestones celebrated.

Alliances were formed, events were debuted and, of course, a few joints were shuttered.

In most respects, 2012 was a banner year for the Memphis food scene, and 2013 could be even more promising, said Patrick Reilly, owner of Majestic Grille and president of the Memphis Restaurant Association.

4. Neely’s Has Plans to Revamp Jefferson Store -

Pat and Gina Neely, Memphis barbecue entrepreneurs and celebrity chef couple from “Down Home with the Neelys” on the Food Network, have closed the two Memphis Neely’s Bar-B-Que restaurants, FedExForum concessions and catering business.

5. Memphis Connect, Neelys Team Up to Fight Hunger -

Memphis Connect, the website of the Leadership Academy’s talent recruitment and retention program, is asking Memphians to submit their picks for their favorite ways to give back in the Bluff City.

6. Neelys Bring Down-Home Style to Tunica -

It’s an age-old argument, and Pat and Gina Neely know it well.

“I like a lot of sauce, but Gina likes her ribs dry,” said Pat, of Neely’s Bar-B-Que and Food Network fame.

7. Kraft Foods Launches Campaign to Fight Hunger -

Kraft Foods has kicked off its Huddle to Fight Hunger campaign with the goal of providing 20 million meals to Feeding America.

The company has coordinated a campaign that uses newspaper and magazine ads, the cinema, consumer incentives, social and mobile activities and the celebrity of Memphis chefs Pat and Gina Neely, sports journalist Erin Andrews and Joe Montana.

8. Crafton Joins Memphis Goodwill As Director of Marketing, PR -

Kimberly Crafton has joined Memphis Goodwill Industries as director of marketing and public relations.

9. D.C.-Bound -

Memphis-based Neely's BBQ, which just received a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Small Business Award, will be honored in April at a small-business summit in Washington. 10. Neely's TV ShowSets Food Network Record -      A new Memphis-based TV show on the Food Network, "Down Home with the Neelys," made the highest-rated series debut in the five-year history of the network's "In the Kitchen" weekend block of programming.

11. Commercial Advisors' Jensen Voted Commercial Broker of the Year -

Larry Jensen has received the 2005 Pinnacle Award for Commercial Broker of the Year from the Memphis Area Association of Realtors' Commercial Council. Jensen is president and CEO of Commercial Advisors LLC. He has more than 30 years of experience in real estate.
