1. Sports Complex Remains Driver of Fairgrounds Redevelopment Plan -

Parts of the city’s tentative plan for redevelopment of the Mid-South Fairgrounds may still come and go and the cost estimates could vary. But Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland’s administration made it clear at a Monday, Nov. 6, public meeting to unveil the most specific plan yet that a youth sports tournament complex is the anchor and driver of the financing for a redevelopment covering 175 acres.

2. Better Catch Schwarber While He’s Still a Smokie -

SEVIERVILLE – Tennessee Smokies catcher Kyle Schwarber didn’t waste any time catching the attention of the Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon during spring training.

It was March 5, Schwarber’s 22nd birthday, and the Cubs were playing San Francisco. Schwarber came to bat for the first time in spring training with the bases loaded against Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong.

3. Henry Named Sales Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Collierville -

Edgar L. Henry II has been named sales manager for Mercedes-Benz of Collierville, scheduled to open next spring. In his new role, Henry will manage the sales of all new and pre-owned cars sold at the dealership.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Gov. Phil Bryant will lead a Mississippi delegation to a trade conference in South Carolina in May.

The 5th Annual Southeastern U.S.-Canadian Provinces Alliance Conference and Trade Mission is scheduled for May 20-22 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

11. Destination King Wins Two Awards -

The Association of Destination Management Executives International honored Memphis-based Destination King during the annual ADMEI Achievement.

The ADMEI honored Destination King for Best Innovative Event (Under $50,000) for the Siemens Distribution Center grand opening and Destination Management Professional of the Year for Kevin Brewer, co-founder and chief operating officer of Destination King.

12. Destination King Partners With Graceful Tables -

Destination King – a Memphis-based event-management company – has partnered with Nashville-based specialty linen rental company Graceful Tables.

As a mini-showroom partner, Destination King will carry one sample of each linen and chair cover in Graceful Tables’ inventory in a specialized display in its Memphis office. An additional showroom is expected to open in early 2012 in Destination King’s Myrtle Beach, S.C., office.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Unemployment rates fell in about three-quarters of large U.S. cities in September, a sign that the nation's modest job gains that month occurred across most of the country.

14. Destination King Expands to Myrtle Beach -

Memphis-based destination management company Destination King is branching out.

The company has expanded its offerings into Myrtle Beach, S.C., which recently was named by TripAdvisor.com as the top vacation destination in the U.S. The city attracts more than 14 million visitors annually.

15. High Note -

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the University of Memphis’ Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music has planned a concert that will blow the roof off, assuming the walls don’t burst at the seams first.

The fact that Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection), which was chosen for the concert, is too big both sound-wise and size-wise for the school’s Harris Concert Hall is reminiscent of the growth that has taken place since the former “music department” became a “school of music” in 2000.

16. Land of Lenny's -

With the opening of a second Downtown Lenny’s, the Memphis-born restaurant chain has the city covered as good as the hot pepper relish on its signature subs.

The new restaurant, slated to open Monday at 153 S. Main St., is just a short jaunt of seven blocks – not even a half-mile – from the existing one at 22 N. Front St.
