1. Germantown To Fund School Deferred Maintenance -

Germantown Mayor Mike Palazzolo will propose more city capital funding in his upcoming budget proposal for renovation and maintenance of schools in the Germantown Municipal School District.

Palazzolo announced the move this week at the groundbreaking for construction of the new $27 million, 110,000-square-foot Germantown Elementary School on Forest Hill-Irene Road south of Poplar Pike.

The Memphis Tigers wrapped up the No. 5 seed in this week’s American Athletic Conference Tournament by thumping East Carolina 90-70 Sunday afternoon at FedExForum.

Oops. I goofed last year. So did lots of other people who thought Tennessee’s football team would win the SEC East Division and go to the league championship game for the first time since 2007.

6. Last Word: A New Chapter, The Kissell Dome and The New Bartlett High School -

Booksellers of Laurelwood is set to return in most of the same location with a smaller footprint and new owners. John Vergos of the Rendezvous and a former Memphis City Council member is among the investors bringing back the East Memphis institution that closed in February. No word on whether the new group will keep the name or go with a new name.

For present purposes, let’s go to McDowell’s May 19 quarterfinal match with Nicolas Colsaerts. On hole 10, a short par-4, Colasaerts sprayed his tee shot right of the fairway, near the green, into a thicket marked as a hazard.

NEW YORK (AP) – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported a 3.6 percent increase in second-quarter net income and raised its earnings guidance for the full year as it benefits from cost-cutting and robust global growth in China, Brazil and Mexico.

25. BancorpSouth Reclaims Three Vacant Properties -

BancorpSouth Bank has bought back three parcels totaling 51.7 acres of land in a substitute trustee’s deed following a foreclosure. The Tupelo, Miss.-based bank paid $1.2 million for two pieces of farmland and one vacant residential lot – all in unincorporated Southeast Shelby County – on the courthouse steps Nov. 10 from substitute trustee David J. Harris of Burch, Porter & Johnson PLLC.

26. Methodist University Hospital Names Essex Assistant Administrator -

Jeshahnton “Shaun” Essex has been named assistant administrator at Methodist University Hospital.

Essex will be responsible for environmental services, mail services, food and nutrition services, laboratory, radiology and facility and engineering services. Essex has served as assistant administrator at Methodist North Hospital the past four years.

27. Frey Named Alpha Eta Society National President -

Dr. William R. Frey recently was selected as the national president of the Alpha Eta Society, the largest scholastic honor for allied health professionals. The organization has more than 60 chapters throughout the U.S.

28. On Pressing the Flesh -

Reda Mansour, the 41-year-old Israeli diplomat who was appointed earlier this fall as consul general of Israel to the southeastern United States, is visiting Memphis this week.

His trip is part of a larger meet-and-greet that's taking him to every major Jewish community in the six states in his diplomatic territory. The Memphis visit includes a lecture Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Memphis Jewish Community Center (MJCC) about the current socio-political situation in Israel and the larger Middle East.
