1. Benchmark Hotel Case Continued Until April -

The public nuisance case between the Downtown Memphis Commission and the owners of the former Benchmark Hotel has been continued until April 12.

Environmental Court Judge Larry Potter had declared the site a public nuisance in February despite claims by the building’s owners, MNR Hospitality, that it was still an active construction site. The building had been in a partially demolished state for more than a year and a half.

The “tough” decision by Judge Larry Potter was made Thursday, Feb. 1, after several hours of legal wrangling by attorneys Danny Schaffzin – representing the Downtown Memphis Commission and a coalition of surrounding business owners including The Rendezvous’ John Vergos, and The Peabody hotel’s Marty Belz – and William Sessions, representing the building’s owners, MNR Hospitality.

4. Former Benchmark Hotel Declared Public Nuisance -

The site of the former Benchmark Hotel in Downtown Memphis has been declared a public nuisance by the Memphis and Shelby County Environmental Court.

5. Marty Belz Honored With Florida Hotel Award -

The Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association has presented the group’s 2010 Charles Andrews Memorial Hospitality Award for Community Leadership to Marty Belz, president and CEO of the Memphis-based Peabody Hotel Group.

6. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Joins Departing Peabody Place Businesses -

After nine years, the Peabody Place retail center tenant that sold treats such as caramel apples and all manner of chocolate sweets has closed its doors.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is the latest Peabody Place business to call it quits, following word this month of another tenant’s closure – Primetime Sports Bar, which opened in 2009 two months after Jillian’s closed.

It will be at least one more year before Belz Enterprises gets all the financing in place to move forward with Peabody Suites, a major transformation Belz envisions for the Peabody Place retail and entertainment center.

Crawford McDonald has assumed the status of director emeritus of BankTennessee. In honor of McDonald’s service, the boardroom at the bank’s East Memphis office will be named the Crawford McDonald Community Room.
