2. Freshman Impact: Vols’ Best Rookie RBs -

Butch Jones let us in on a little secret recently when he said his freshman running backs will play for Tennessee this season.

That’s plural – running backs.

Jones’ plan is to use all three freshman backs – Ty Chandler, Tim Jordan and Trey Coleman – in some sort of rotation behind junior John Kelly. Given the nature of the game, putting the football in the hands of freshmen is risky business. But Jones is taking the plunge.

3. Browne Named RISE Foundation Board Chair -

Terri Browne, chief people officer for Sedgwick Claims Management Services Inc., has been named board chair of the nonprofit RISE Foundation, which seeks to improve the lives of low-income working Memphians through financial literacy.

4. $1,000-a-Pill Sovaldi Jolts US Health Care System -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Your money or your life?

Sovaldi, a new pill for hepatitis C, cures the liver-wasting disease in 9 of 10 patients, but treatment can cost more than $90,000.

Leading medical societies recommend the drug as a first-line treatment, and patients are clamoring for it. But insurance companies and state Medicaid programs are gagging on the price. In Oregon, officials propose to limit how many low-income patients can get Sovaldi.

5. Advisory Board to Examine Community Health Needs -

Dr. David Stern, executive dean of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, has launched a unique effort to address community health needs in Memphis.

“It’s my belief that a medical school has a very unique opportunity to interact with the community,” Stern said. “I consider our community to be a very important laboratory – it is an underserved, minority community that is in ill health. The biggest contribution we can make is to move the needle on overall community health and to develop new methods that we can apply to other communities like Memphis.”

6. Advisory Board Formed For UTHSC College of Medicine -

City leaders gathered earlier last week at the Hamilton Eye Institute boardroom at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine over concerns about health care and higher education in Memphis.

The 18 meeting attendees, including Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, state Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, and local CEOs and civic leaders, formed an ongoing advisory board for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine. The advisory group will provide evidence and value-based approaches to delivering health care to physicians-in-training as well as finding new ways to reach out to the community.

7. Levine Named President of Southern Growth Studio -

Mark Levine has joined Southern Growth Studio as president. In his role, Levine leads the firm’s Strategic Analysis team and plays a key part in the company’s culture, business development and client relationship management.

8. Harris Named Payroll Specialist At New Patrick Payroll Div. -

Tammy Harris has been named the payroll specialist at Patrick Payroll, a newly branded division of the certified public accounting firm Patrick Accounting and Tax Services PLLC. Patrick Payroll is housed in Patrick Accounting’s office in Germantown.
