1. University of Memphis, Church Health Center Form Partnership -

The University of Memphis and the Church Health Center are forming a partnership to help the underserved of Memphis.

Both organizations will sign an agreement Sept. 15 at the U of M’s FedEx Institute of Technology that reflects the new collaboration in areas including wellness research, programming and education.

3. State Health Commissioner Talks Prevention -

The School of Public Health at the University of Memphis on Tuesday, Jan. 15, welcomed Tennessee Commissioner of Health Dr. John Dreyzehner and his health policy team to the Fishbowl Room inside the FedEx Institute of Technology for a “town hall” discussion of public health and economic issues that affect our community.

It’s well-known that the Memphis area’s population suffers from a host of chronic health issues, from obesity to hypertension to Type 2 diabetes, making it ground zero for students and researchers dedicated to finding solutions to public health issues.

5. Levy Named Assistant Dean in U of M School of Public Health -

Dr. Marian Levy has been named assistant dean of students and public health practice for the University of Memphis School of Public Health. Levy is also an associate professor in the school and is the current president of the Tennessee Public Health Association.

6. Events -

The University of Memphis will showcase green transportation at its annual Tiger Blue Goes Green Day Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Student Plaza. The event will encourage environmental awareness, inquiry and activism among students, faculty and staff. In a related event, Stephanie Cox, Tennessee area manager for ECOtality, will discuss electric vehicles and charging stations Monday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in the University Center Fountain Room, room 350. 7. University of Memphis Plans Tiger Blue Goes Green Day -

The University of Memphis is taking a step in the “green” direction with its annual Tiger Blue Goes Green Day. The event, which is part of a national campaign called the Electric Vehicle Project, will be held Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the student plaza. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Michael D. Rose Theatre.

8. U of M Goes Green With Environmental Fair -

The University of Memphis is showing off its green stripes on campus Tuesday with its third annual environmental awareness fair.

Dubbed “Tiger Blue Goes Green,” the event will bring in campus and community groups offering information, displays, and even places to recycle cell phones and other items. All of this is intended to celebrate and publicize the university’s commitment to eco-friendly policies, with an emphasis on “green jobs.”

The University of Memphis will hold Sustainable Technologies Awareness Day today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Student Plaza adjacent to the Administration Building. The campus-wide event will encourage environmental awareness. Memphis College of Art will present “Control and Collaboration,” a multimedia project presentation, today at noon in the Callicott Auditorium on campus, 1930 Poplar Ave. There will be a discussion about the balance between individual control and group collaboration in the creation of new multimedia projects. 11. Levy Receives Ruby R. Wharton Award -

Dr. Marian Levy, associate professor and director of the Master of Public Health program at the University of Memphis, has received the Ruby R. Wharton Outstanding Woman Award in the area of race relations.

12. Memphis' 'Most Sedentary' Distinction A Southern Thing -

When it comes to demographic and health studies, Memphis is a big fat target.

The latest study, by Forbes.com, ranks the Bluff City at the top of the list of America's most sedentary cities, closely followed by Southern sisters such as Nashville, Birmingham, Ala., New Orleans and Atlanta.
