1. Companies Set Monthly Record for Mergers, Acquisitions -

U.S. companies are cutting merger deals at a record pace even though antitrust regulators have moved to oppose several recent high-profile combinations.

So far this month, companies have agreed to mergers and acquisitions valued at more than $251 billion, financial-information provider Dealogic said late Friday. That surpasses the previous record of $240 billion in July 2015.

(AP) – The Justice Department announced Monday it's awarding more than $20 million for law enforcement agencies around the country to establish or enhance their use of body cameras, a move that comes after several fatal shootings of black men by police that have prompted widespread protests.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The FBI won't recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server while secretary of state, agency Director James Comey said Tuesday, lifting a major legal threat to her presidential campaign. But Comey called her actions "extremely careless" and faulted the agency she led for a lackadaisical approach to handling classified material.

5. Twitter Moves to Actively Seek Out Terrorist Supporters -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Twitter is now using spam-fighting technology to seek out accounts that might be promoting terrorist activity and is examining other accounts related to those flagged for possible removal, the company announced Friday.

U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton says his office, the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department’s civil rights division are conducting a “comprehensive review” of the July fatal police shooting of Darrius Stewart.

7. Lawyers for Stewart's Family Want Special Prosecutor -

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The top prosecutor in Memphis took more than two months to review an 800-page investigative report by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on the shooting death of a black teen by a white police officer. Then she recommended that a grand jury charge the policeman with voluntary manslaughter.

8. US, States Announce Settlement with BP Over Gulf Oil Spill -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department and five states on Monday announced a $20 billion final settlement of claims arising from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

9. Obama Wants to Give Prisoners Access to Pell Grants -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is taking steps to expand the Pell grant program to prisoners.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Loretta Lynch have scheduled a visit to the Maryland Correctional Institution in Jessup, Maryland, on Friday to announce the plans.

The best indication the public has of how Darrius Stewart died is a YouTube video of his encounter Friday, July 17, with Memphis Police on Winchester Road.

It’s dark, it’s hard to make out key details and there is a lot happening in and out of the frame.

The Justice Department is announcing a new phase in efforts to combat human trafficking.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch says federal officials are looking for more cities to participate in the next phase of a program aimed at streamlining trafficking investigations and prosecutions.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Four of the world's biggest banks agreed Wednesday to pay more than $5 billion in penalties and plead guilty to rigging the currency markets – a rare instance in which federal prosecutors have wrung an admission of criminal wrongdoing from a major financial institution.

13. Senate Confirms Sally Q. Yates as Deputy Attorney General -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate has confirmed Sally Quillian Yates to be deputy attorney general, putting two women in the top posts at the Justice Department.

The vote was 84-12.

Last month, the Senate confirmed Loretta Lynch to be attorney general, replacing Eric Holder. Lynch's confirmation came after a protracted fight over a sex trafficking bill and amid disputes over President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration.
