1. Law Firm Leases Keep East Submarket Strong in Q3 -

Despite a growing trend of major businesses relocating Downtown, the East submarket still led the way by a large margin in office leasing volume in the third quarter.

In total, the Memphis office market absorbed 156,280 square feet of space, which marks the third consecutive quarter of positive absorption, according to Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors’ Q3 Office MarketBeat report. This brings the year-to-date net absorption to 625,707 square feet, a drastic increase from the negative 59,344 square feet absorbed in the first three quarters a year ago.

2. MAAR Elects Five New 2018 Board Members -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors elected five new members for its 2018-19 board of directors at its annual meeting Thursday, Aug. 31.

The new members include Amanda Lott and Loura Edmondson of Crye-Leike Inc. Realtors; Eric Fuhrman of Crye-Leike Commercial; Keith Gilliam of Weichert Realtors; and Grace Uhlhorn of Keller Williams Realty.

NEW YORK (AP) – In the name of convenience, Amazon and Walmart are pushing people to shop by just talking to a digital assistant.

Shopping by voice means giving orders to the Alexa assistant on Amazon's Echo speaker and other devices, even if your hands are tied up with dinner or dirty diapers. And next month, Walmart will start offering voice shopping , too, with the Google Assistant on the rival Home speaker.

5. Ernest Strickland Takes On Workforce Role at Chamber -

The Greater Memphis Chamber has promoted Ernest Strickland to senior vice president of workforce development, a newly created role. Strickland, who has worked at the chamber since 2006, previously served as vice president of international and business partnerships.
In his new position, he is responsible for creating and implementing the chamber’s workforce development strategy. His department serves as a liaison, working directly with existing and prospective businesses to ensure they are able to attract and retain a qualified workforce today and in the future.

6. Kirkpatrick Named CFO At Commercial Advisors -

Lori Kirkpatrick has joined Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors as chief financial officer. In this role, Kirkpatrick oversees all finance and accounting functions at the commercial real estate services firm, including lease administration services provided to clients.

Julie Wells has joined Evans Petree PC as an associate in the East Memphis office, focusing her practice in health care law and general business matters.
