3. Taxing Decision -

Local medical device manufacturers like Smith & Nephew, Medtronic Inc. and Wright Medical Group Inc. are crossing their fingers that Congress will follow through on a repeal of the 2.3 percent medical device excise tax enacted in January.

4. Wright Medical to Present at Healthcare Conference -

Arlington-based Wright Medical Group Inc. will participate in the 22nd annual Oppenheimer Healthcare Conference Tuesday, Dec. 13, in New York City.

5. Wright Medical Receives Justice Dept. Notice -

Wright Medical Group Inc. on Thursday announced that it received a letter from the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey pursuant to Paragraph 50 of the Deferred Prosecution Agreement stating that the USAO believes Wright Medical Group knowingly and willfully breached material provisions of the DPA.

6. Wright Medical Reports Earnings, Resignation of 3 Execs -

As Wright Medical Group Inc. Wednesday reported its net sales had increased 3 percent to $135.4 million in the first quarter of 2011 up from $131.2 million for the same period last year, the company also announced three of its executives have resigned effective immediately.

7. Stevens Replaces Henley as Wright President, CEO -

Wright Medical Group Inc. announced Tuesday its board has appointed Chairman David D. Stevens as interim president and CEO, effective immediately.

8. Wright Medical to Expand Via Acquisition -

Wright Medical Group Inc. will look to acquire smaller companies and buy the rights to new technologies as part of its growth strategy.

9. Orthopedic Firms Defend Metal-on-Metal Hip Devices -

Memphis manufacturers of hip implants began touting the safety records of their products this week because of a spate of recent news reports about complications with “metal-on-metal” bearings.

An editorial in the January edition of The Journal of Arthroplasty titled “Metal on Metal: Is It Worth the Risk” was followed by a March 3 article in The New York Times. A few days later, the newspaper reported DePuy Orthopaedics, which is based in Warsaw, Ind., had warned doctors that its ASR metal-on-metal appeared to have a high failure rate.

10. Wright Medical Names New CFO -

Lance A. Berry will replace John K. Bakewell as chief financial officer of Arlington-based Wright Medical Group Inc. Dec. 11 when Bakewell will leave to take a position with another company.
