1. Vaughan Claims Republican Nomination in State House District 95 -

Collierville Schools board member Kevin Vaughan won the Republican primary election for state House District 95 Thursday, April 27, by 49 votes over former Germantown alderman Frank Uhlhorn.

Voters in Collierville, Germantown and Eads go to the polls Thursday, April 27, for primaries to fill the vacant State House District 95 seat.

The 10 candidates who qualified in the special elections for state House District 95 have until noon Monday, March 20, to withdraw if they wish. Otherwise the Shelby County Election Commission will set the ballot Tuesday for the primary and general elections.

Seven contenders have filed to run in the special April Republican primary for the District 95 state House seat from Shelby County.

The seven contenders each filed qualifying petitions by the Thursday, March 16, noon deadline. They and three other candidates – two independent and one Democrat – have until noon Monday to withdraw from the race if they wish.

Boyd’s opening sounds very much like he is running as the heir apparent to Gov. Bill Haslam – although there are no heirs in politics, at least not without an election. He talked a lot about hitting workforce development and job goals of the Haslam administration if he is elected Governor in 2018.

Thirteen incumbents in the four suburban municipal elections on the Nov. 8 ballot were effectively re-elected to new terms at the Thursday, Aug. 18, filing deadline for the set of 30 races.

And Chris Denson claimed a seat on the Millington School Board with no opposition for the position incumbent Donald Holsinger is giving up to run for alderman in Millington.

Voters in Shelby County’s six suburban towns and cities elected their respective municipal schools boards Thursday, Nov. 7 with low voter turnouts that reflected that most of the school board positions on the ballots were one-candidate uncontested races.

15. Early Voting Expands in District 91 Primary -

Early voting in the Democratic primary special election for State House District 91 expands Friday, Sept. 27, from the Shelby County Election Commission’s Downtown offices, 157 Poplar Ave., to three satellite locations.

It looks as if the prospective candidates in many of the suburban school board races on the Nov. 7 ballot had already decided the winners a day away from the noon, Thursday, Sept. 26, filing deadline for the six sets of races.

Early voting comes to an end Saturday, Sept. 14, in the first two of 11 elections between now and Thanksgiving.

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the last chance for voters in Arlington and Lakeland to vote in municipal elections at the Shelby County Election Commission offices at 157 Poplar Ave. Lakeland voters can also vote Saturday only at theRefuge church, 9817 Huff ‘n’ Puff Road.

Construction gets underway later this month on a 41,000-square-foot Mercedes-Benz dealership in Collierville that will include a 16,000-square-foot showroom and provide about 50 new jobs for the area.

19. Obama Carries Shelby, Cohen Over Flinn and Two Tax Hikes Defeated -

President Barack Obama carried Shelby County in unofficial Nov. 6 election returns as his Republican challenger Mitt Romney took the state’s 11 electoral votes.

Voter turnout in the most popular election cycle among Shelby County voters was 61.9 percent, about the same percentage as four years ago. But the 371,256 voters is fewer than 2008 when more than 400,000 Shelby County voters cast ballots. The percentage is about the same because there are fewer registered voters in Shelby County than there were four years ago after a purge by election officials.

20. Suburban School Board Races Almost Set -

Races on the Nov. 6 ballot for six sets of suburban school boards took shape Thursday, Aug. 16, at the noon filing deadline for candidate qualifying petitions.

The candidates that made the deadline have another week to withdraw from the races if they wish.

21. Music Engineers Cut Old Path With Vinyl Recordings -

Producing vinyl records – those albums that most people 40 and older grew up with – has rapidly become a lost art as technology has sent that format the way of the 8-track tape.

But a few local music engineers are turning back the clock by refurbishing a Neumann VMS 70 lathe – a machine that is used to cut vinyl discs – that Stax founder Jim Stewart began using in 1970.
