1. Olympus Opens Expanded Bartlett Campus -

Medical device manufacturer Olympus celebrated the grand opening of its $12 million expanded Bartlett campus at 2937 Appling Road on Tuesday, March 6. The state-of-the-art facility expands Olympus’ existing R&D and surgical manufacturing building on Appling Road, which has operated in Bartlett since 1984.

2. Century Mark -

During a visit to Memphis in April, Andrew Young was talking with reporters about his lengthy public history – being part of Dr. Martin Luther King’s inner circle, a congressman, mayor of Atlanta, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. It was as he talked about King’s death in Memphis that Young, without any prompting, talked about a trio of Memphis attorneys – Benjamin Hooks, Russell Sugarmon and A. W. Willis – that were the key to his and King’s efforts to get things done in Memphis and the surrounding region.

The city of Bartlett has 29 parks, and every one of them has a walking trail. But the path that formally opens to the public Friday, April 21, at a trailhead at Santa Valley Road and U.S. 64 is Bartlett’s first venture in a full-fledged greenway.

Keith Woods, National Public Radio’s vice president for diversity in news and operations, will be the guest speaker for the sixth annual Norm Brewer First Amendment Lecture at the University of Memphis. The lecture will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. in the University Center River Room. The event is free and open to the public.

16. LGSTX Services Expands Local Warehouse -

LGSTX Services Inc. is relocating and expanding its Memphis warehouse operations. The Wilmington, Ohio-based firm, which specializes in aviation support and facility services, has leased 184,680 square feet across two facilities in the Southwide Distribution area at 363 Burma Road and 410 Burma Road.

17. Cohen-Hart in Congressional Race at Filing Deadline -

The chairman of the countywide school board, Billy Orgel, was effectively elected to his District 7 school board seat without opposition at the Thursday, April 5, filing deadline for candidates on the Aug. 2 primary and general election ballot in Shelby County.

18. Early Voting Barely Eclipses 3 Percent -

Votes approached the 13,000 mark through the last weekend of the early voting period in advance of the March 8 Election Day for the schools consolidation referendum.

Early voting across the city in the referendum and a one-candidate special election race for District 98 state representative ends Thursday evening.

22. A River Runs Through Us: Memphis’ once and future connection with the Wolf -

A cottonmouth slithers through the marsh. A wolf spider clings to a cypress tree. A white heron soars above the bottomland forest.

Paddle a canoe down the Ghost River section of the Wolf River in Fayette County and you’ll travel through multiple, distinct ecosystems teeming with wildlife.
