A new gourmet meals service is coming to Chickasaw Crossing on Poplar Avenue just east of the Union Avenue viaduct.

Le Jardin will offer gourmet meals to go; a soft opening is scheduled Nov. 17 with a grand opening celebration planned for Dec. 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Thanksgiving Eve, we drove to the airport to pick up my stepson, one of whose flights had been delayed, so it was after 10 by the time he emerged from baggage claim. All being hungry, I drove to Cooper-Young, thinking we could easily get in at the recently opened Alchemy at 10:30.

A quality one doesn’t find often in chefs is modesty. We’ve all dined at restaurants where the primary ingredient is the chef’s ego, served with side-dishes of arrogance and hubris.

Fortunato Oliva, on the other hand, is happy to admit the debt he owes to his family – especially his grandmother, mother and aunt – and to the mentors he worked with since he was 16 years old, that is, for half his life.

Most sources agree that the Cuban sandwich, or the Cubano, came to Florida in the 1860s with Cuban cigar makers who settled in Key West and later, in the 1880s, in Ybor City, a neighborhood of Tampa noted for its cigar factories. The sandwich received a boost in Miami from the influx of Cuban exiles and expatriates who fled their island home after the success of Castro’s revolution in 1959.

Midtown has a reputation for one of Memphis’ most eclectic areas, adorned with vintage houses, international cuisine and funky entertainment venues.

In the coming weeks, it will broaden its portfolio even more with three Memphis eateries: Gigi’s Cupcakes, The Slider Inn and a yet-to-be named concept in Cooper-Young.
