1. William Faulkner Conference Focuses on Slavery as Theme -

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A conference at the University of Mississippi is focusing on what slavery meant in the life, imagination and writing of William Faulkner.

On a recent afternoon at AutoZone Park, manager Stubby Clapp’s team had a two-run lead going into the ninth inning. Assigned the task of getting the last three outs: veteran big league closer Greg Holland, he of 186 career saves and three All-Star appearances, and on this day pitching for the Memphis Redbirds on a rehab assignment.

3. Redbirds Again Will Have Multiple Top Prospects -

Tuesday was Media Day at AutoZone Park for the reigning Pacific Coast League champion Memphis Redbirds. And some of the players who helped win that title were back; others likely will be.

The only constant in minor league baseball, after all, is the ever-changing roster. Pitcher Jack Flaherty, 22, was ticketed to begin the season with the Triple-A Redbirds. But when the Cardinals placed veteran Adam Wainwright on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, that opened a starting role for Flaherty; he was slated to get the ball Tuesday night, April 3, at Milwaukee.

4. Report: ESPN President Resigned Over Cocaine Extortion Plot -

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The former president of ESPN said he resigned from the sports network after an extortion plot by someone who sold him cocaine.

John Skipper told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Thursday that the drug seller, whom he did not name, tried to extort him in December. He said he hadn't had dealings with the seller before, and previously had been "careful" about buying cocaine.

NEW YORK (AP) – John Skipper, president of the sprawling ESPN sports network, said Monday that he is resigning to treat a substance abuse problem.

6. Redbirds Capture PCL Title -

Patrick Wisdom, one of the few constants on the Memphis Redbirds this season, hit a two-run homer and made a critical defensive play in Sunday’s 3-1 victory at El Paso to win the Pacific Coast League championship.

NEW YORK (AP) – The NBA and its television partners couldn't wait to extend their contracts.

The league renewed its deals with ESPN and TNT even though two seasons remain on the old ones. With potential competition from Fox looming, both networks were willing to pay generously to secure the rights long term.

Memphis Redbirds outfielder Oscar Taveras is the St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospect. Memphis outfielder Randal Grichuk was the one to get called up to St. Louis this week as the Cardinals try to pump some life into their struggling offense.
