1. Arkansas Town's Mayor Hopes Mural Will Attract Visitors -

BLACK OAK, Ark. (AP) — A new mural is giving drivers pause in Black Oak. And most are pulling over for an extended look. Three large panels — one displaying a portrait of famed author John Grisham, who set his novel "A Painted House" in the city, one displaying a field of lily-white cotton and one, a re-creation of 1973's "High on the Hog" album by hometown Southern rock supergroup Black Oak Arkansas — are the latest additions to the small town.

2. Tennessee Finalizes Settlement With Ousted Chancellor -

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The University of Tennessee has finalized a $1.33 million settle-ment with ousted chancellor Beverly Davenport, formally ending her employment at the school after a tumultuous tenure that lasted less than 1 1/2 years.

3. Last Word: Closing the Door, Midtown Rents and Red West's Many Roles -

It didn’t take the Shelby County Commission very long Wednesday to close the door on its budget season – about 20 minutes in the day’s special meeting to approve a county property tax rate of $4.11 on third and final reading. That’s not a quick up or down vote. And it took just a bit longer because there is still some discussion about whether this was a reduction in the tax rate or a tax cut in the sense that a homeowner in Shelby County would understand the term.

4. Last Word: Milhaus Sells, Voucher Debate Gets Heated and Boyd's Fly Around -

Highland Row isn’t fully open yet and it is already up for sale as part of a real estate portfolio. The owner, Milhaus, based in Indianapolis, is a development, construction and property management company that works in mixed use development. And the portfolio being on the market could turn into a recapitalization.

5. Schism Among State Republicans Hits Critical Point With Resignation -

A rift within the Tennessee Republican Party, whether a tempest in a teapot or the early signs of implosion, isn’t likely to hit the big tent party hard at the polls this fall.

But make no mistake, there is some trouble in paradise.

6. This week in Memphis history: January 1-7 -

1993: Production of the motion picture "The Firm" is underway in Memphis with Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman and Jeanne Tripplehorn in the city to film the adaptation of the John Grisham novel. Producers of the movie decide to shoot exterior scenes in the city as well and use the old International Harvester plant in Frayser, which includes a law library for the fictional law firm.

7. MPLOYment Opportunities -

John Hickman has been consumed lately by the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art’s upcoming centennial celebration. Parties need to be planned. Showings and displays must be coordinated. Marketing must be launched. And the facility must look great.

8. Sekisui, Circa to Relocate Spaces -

Two East Memphis restaurants soon will have new addresses. 

Sekisui is moving from its original location in the Shops of Humphreys Center, 50 Humphreys Blvd., into Circa by John Bragg’s space in Regalia Shopping Center at 6150 Poplar Ave., suite 122. Circa plans to relocate west to Chickasaw Crossing, 2855 Poplar, in the space where Ronnie Grisanti’s restaurant operated for years.

9. Ky.-Tenn. River Port Development Eyed -

UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) – The new project coordinator for the Ken-Tenn Regional Alliance Development Corp. says he will focus on three river ports in the five-county area.

10. Aces Increases Presence With Two Leases -

Aces A/C Supply North has recently signed two leases in the region – one in Memphis and one in Jackson, Tenn.

Carrollton, Texas-based Aces, a representative of American Standard Heating and Air Conditioning, is a wholesaler of air conditioning and equipment and parts.

11. Grubb & Ellis’ deWitt Appointed To MAAR Commercial Council -

Greg deWitt of Grubb & Ellis Co. has been appointed to the Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council. He will take over one of the council’s director seats next year before becoming the council’s vice president in 2012.

12. MAAR Commercial Council Welcomes New Board Members -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council held its annual board of directors meeting Thursday, approving three new members for its 2011 board.

Greg deWitt of Grubb & Ellis Co. will take over one of the council’s director seats next year before becoming the council’s vice president in 2012. He will inherit the seat occupied by John Mercer of Highwoods Properties in 2011.

13. MAAR Commercial Council Names 2010 Officers -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council announced Friday that Wyatt Aiken of Commercial Advisors will serve as 2010 president and Ron Riley of In-Rel Management will serve as 2010 president-elect.

14. Technology vs. Unique Resume -

In the annals of Memphis mayoral elections, it seems no candidate has run a race quite like Herman Morris Jr.

Morris - Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division's former top executive - has built a campaign operation that boasts the technological edge and efficiency of a small corporation. His supporters can sign up for cell phone text alerts and Internet podcasts. Videos are posted to his Web site.
