John Hope Bryant has come through Memphis International Airport many times on business. The founder of the financial literacy nonprofit “Operation HOPE” was always aware the airport was Martin Luther King’s last arrival point on the way to his assassination in 1968.

8. Ernest Strickland Takes On Workforce Role at Chamber -

The Greater Memphis Chamber has promoted Ernest Strickland to senior vice president of workforce development, a newly created role. Strickland, who has worked at the chamber since 2006, previously served as vice president of international and business partnerships.
In his new position, he is responsible for creating and implementing the chamber’s workforce development strategy. His department serves as a liaison, working directly with existing and prospective businesses to ensure they are able to attract and retain a qualified workforce today and in the future.

10. John Hampton Getting Brass Note on Beale -

John Hampton, the Grammy-award winning recording engineer and producer at Ardent who died late last year, is getting a Brass Note on the Beale Street Walk of Fame.

Ardent announced the news Friday and is encouraging the public to join them in front of Alfred’s Sunday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. to start the celebration.

Vince DeGutis, a partner in Deloitte Tax LLP, has been named Deloitte’s Memphis managing partner.
In his new role, DeGutis is responsible for overseeing the Memphis office, enhancing Deloitte’s brand and reputation in the business and civic community, and facilitating revenue growth by advancing targeting and growth activities. He is also responsible for the development and implementation strategies to attract and retain the next generation of leaders within Deloitte.

A Memphis sports fan has great motivation to now focus on the Grizzlies and the NBA, study for his or her upcoming Fantasy Baseball draft, or count the days until football kicks off.

Undefeated Kentucky, led by former University of Memphis coach John Calipari, is the prohibitive favorite to win the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers not only didn’t make the field – it would have been their fifth straight trip under coach Josh Pastner – but also weren’t invited to the NIT.

20. Jones, Vols Make Honor Roll With Recruiting Class -

KNOXVILLE – Butch Jones has done it again.

Tennessee’s football coach has created a national buzz with his 2015 recruiting class.

UT finished with the No. 4 class in the nation as rated by 247Sports and ended up ranked No. 5 by Rivals when the Feb. 4 national signing day was over.

30. All Eyes Turn to Mississippi River -

The Mississippi River at Memphis officially went above flood stage Wednesday morning with a reading of 35.36 feet at 9 a.m.

That compared to a 33.7 foot reading 24 hours earlier. In between the two readings, the river reached 34 feet – the level that is considered flood stage in Memphis.
