7. Funds Needed to Upgrade Theater Wireless -

Due to a congressional ruling, Theatre Memphis is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to replace $30,000 worth of wireless microphones and related equipment.

As of June 12, anyone operating on the 700-megahertz bandwidth was required to vacate those frequencies, which have been sold by the federal government primarily to wireless carriers and public safety responders nationwide.

8. Cash Wants to Enlist Paid Tutors From Student Ranks -

As part of the sweeping overhaul he envisions bringing to Memphis City Schools, new district superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash wants to enlist students to work for the school system as tutors.

“What if instead of working for Back Yard Burger … for $6 an hour, work for me. Work for city schools,” Cash said last week to about 250 members of the Memphis Rotary Club.

9. Memphian Wages Battle to Save Youth -

A Washington Post headline two weeks ago described Memphis businessman Bob Compton as waging his own personal campaign to save America.

And for the last several months, the venture capitalist and former Sofamor Danek executive arguably has worn that mantle in a very prominent way. Compton was scheduled to meet Friday, for example, with U.S. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, to give a private screening of his new documentary film, "Two Million Minutes."

The Memphis Bar Association is sponsoring the publication of an updated history of its own, an exhaustive tome with hundreds of photos, a 70,000-word story and in-depth profiles of local law firms.

11. Peterson Named Director of Purchasing at UTHSC -

Kenneth M. Peterson has been appointed director of purchasing for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Previously, Peterson was a career employee of the U.S. government, and formerly served as director of the National Acquisition Center for the Customs and Border Patrol Protection Service in the Department of Homeland Security.
