NEW YORK (AP) – Walmart will soon reach shoppers in India's massive consumer market directly, as it takes control of the online retailer Flipkart that's known for its ubiquitous delivery drivers on motorcycles with oversized backpacks.

2. Beale Authority Ends Talks With 21 Beale -

The Beale Street Tourism Development Authority has ended contract talks with the 21 Beale group to manage the entertainment district. And the group voted Tuesday, Oct. 25, to continue the Downtown Memphis Commission’s interim management of the district indefinitely.

3. Court Strikes Down Enhanced Sentencing Law for Gang Members -

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The state Criminal Appeals Court says a Tennessee law that allows longer sentences for gang members is unconstitutional.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1WhkgLi) the Thursday ruling came in the case of Devonte Bonds, Thomas Bishop and Jason Sullivan. The three were convicted of attempted second-degree murder for beating Jonathan Dyer when they kicked him out of their gang.

4. Uber Balks at Rules Proposed by World's Busiest Airport -

ATLANTA (AP) – Atlanta's airport – the world's busiest – and Los Angeles officials want to force Uber drivers to get fingerprint-based background checks to pick up passengers, but the ride-hailing service is balking.

5. Last Word: The Trade, Hardaway-Todd Grudge Match and Tomato Aspic -

Jeff Green leaves the Grizzlies for the Clippers and Lance Stephenson leaves the Clippers for the Grizzlies.
That was the trade at the NBA’s Thursday afternoon deadline that caused much of Thursday’s deadline buzz as well as lots of social media reaction.
Some of the reaction was tempered by the other part, a protected lottery pick for the Grizz as well.

Jackie Lucas has joined Regional One Health as senior vice president and chief information officer. In her new role, Lucas is responsible for information technology and telecommunications for the organization.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Unemployment rates fell in 31 U.S. states in September, including in many where incumbent governors and senators face tough re-election campaigns. The report is the final data on state unemployment before the Nov. 4 elections.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) – An East Tennessee election official says petitions seeking a local vote on supermarket wine sales have begun circulating.

Sullivan County Administrator of Elections Jason Booher told the Bristol Herald Courier that petitioners have until Aug. 21 to get enough signatures in Bristol and Kingsport.

13. Beale Street Music Festival Lineup Announced -

The bill for the three-day Memphis in May Beale Street Music this year features a new night of late night dance music from a stage in Tom Lee Park and a 69-act lineup in which Memphis artists are nearly a third of the diverse set of performers.

24. Tenn. House GOP Leader to Retire -

NASHVILLE (AP) – Tennessee House Majority Leader Jason Mumpower, who lost last year’s election for speaker in a shocking upset, announced Thursday he won’t seek re-election.

The 36-year-old Republican was first elected to the seat representing part of Sullivan County and all of Johnson County in 1996.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Republican takeover of the General Assembly has been accompanied by a geographical power shift that may finally put to rest the old saying that Tennessee ends in Knoxville.

26. Top 2 House Republicans Named in Ethics Complaint -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The top two Republicans in the state House have been accused of improper conduct in the 2008 campaign by a Democrat who lost re-election.

The complaint before the Tennessee Ethics Commission names Republican Reps. Jason Mumpower of Bristol and Glen Casada of Franklin, along with Casada adviser Scott Gilmer.

27. Herrington Named Field Director at Shoemaker Financial -

Jason Herrington, a financial adviser at Shoemaker Financial, has been named a field director for the firm. He will have the responsibility of advising and mentoring new advisers during their two-year training period.

28. State Preps to Distribute$20M for Local Projects -      The state's $20 million in grants for local projects will be fairly distributed even though there's no cap on the amount of money that can be given to an organization, the official overseeing the program said Monday.
29. Sills Appointed To AANS Bulletin Advisory Board -

Dr. Allen K. Sills Jr., medical director of the Neuroscience Institute at Methodist University Hospital, associate professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and neurosurgeon at Semmes-Murphey Neurologic & Spine Institute, has been appointed to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons' (AANS) Bulletin advisory board. Sills will contribute articles to the AANS' quarterly publication, "The Bulletin."
