St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has applied for an $84.5 million permit for construction on its Downtown campus, part of a $9 billion strategic plan announced late last year.

Addition and alterations will take place at 262 N. Danny Thomas Blvd., according to the application, which lists W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Co. as the contractor.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is launching a graduate school of biomedical sciences on its campus in the fall of 2017.

The hospital’s unanimous vote of approval from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission paves the way for development of the St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The hospital says the school, located in a custom space within The Marlo Thomas Center for Global Education and Collaboration, will train the next generation of academic researchers in an interdisciplinary environment that’s home to more than 200 basic scientists and clinicians working across 21 academic departments.

47. Thomas Family Sets Course at St. Jude -

Her official title is national outreach director of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

But in the 23 years since the death of her father, St. Jude founder and entertainer Danny Thomas, Marlo Thomas has deeply influenced the course of the internationally known Memphis medical institution.

48. Patients Before Profit -

When Hillary Clinton visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 20 years ago to dedicate the then new patient care center, she was the first lady.

Clinton – the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state – was back at St. Jude on Thursday, Nov. 20, to attend the dedication of the hospital’s Marlo Thomas Center for Global Education and Collaboration.

The position is in addition to his current leadership responsibilities as St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center director and executive vice president. Gilbertson takes over the scientific director position from Dr. James R. Downing, who was appointed St. Jude president and chief executive officer earlier this year.

Dr. James R. Downing will become the new CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, effective July 15.

St. Jude announced Downing’s appointment on Wednesday, June 25. He most recently had served as the deputy director, executive vice president and scientific director of the hospital. Downing’s work as a genome sequencing pioneer, overseeing the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project, was recognized in 2012 by TIME magazine as one of the top 100 new scientific discoveries.

53. Warehouse Owner Files $1.1 Million Loan on Property -

The owner of the 117,300-square-foot warehouse at 4242 B.F. Goodrich Blvd. in Oakhaven has filed a $1.1 million loan on the property.

Riveredge Co. Inc., which lists a Bartlett address, filed the deed of trust April 16 through Peoples Bank of Clifton, Tenn.

54. St. Jude’s Downing Elected to Institute of Medicine -

Dr. James R. Downing of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been elected to the Institute of Medicine, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences.

Downing, the hospital’s scientific director, deputy director and executive vice president, becomes the sixth member of the institute from St. Jude.

55. Time Recognizes St. Jude Genome Project -

In February, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital completed a three-year-effort to sequence the genomes of 700 pediatric cancer tumors. It’s the largest project of its kind in the world.

56. Eric Trump Foundation Donates $1M to St. Jude -

Eric Trump, the son of business magnate Donald Trump and executive vice president of Development and Acquisitions at The Trump Organization, traveled to Memphis Friday to present a $1 million check from his nonprofit Eric Trump Foundation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Robert Webster, a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital virologist who has researched influenza, will give the 2010 Leeuwenhoek Lecture to the world’s oldest scientific academy, The Royal Society in London, next summer.

58. St. Jude Identifies Causes of Leukemia Relapse -

Scientists at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital have identified distinctive genetic changes in the cancer cells of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia that cause relapse.

The finding offers a pathway to designing treatments for relapse of the disease in children and, ultimately, adults, St. Jude said in a press release.
