The battle between Graceland and the Grizz over Graceland expansion plans involving some kind of venue in Whitehaven isn’t over. In fact, it seems to have intensified with the latest plan by Elvis Presley Enterprises that went before the EDGE board Wednesday. The EDGE board delayed it again with one EDGE board member saying each side in the dispute has threatened to sue depending on the decision EDGE makes.

Playhouse on the Square will not be making public the details of its investigation or a report it commissioned on an allegation of “sexual misconduct” by theater founder Jackie Nichols. But the theater’s board could be required to report the allegation to authorities if it hasn’t already, Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich confirmed Tuesday, March 20.

They also decide to pick up a petition,” she wrote in an email with the list of who has pulled and who has filed in the last two days.

Loeb Properties wants to build on the revival of Overton Square by adding a $24 million, 100-room hotel in the district.

The Memphis-based company and its partners – boutique hotel developer LRC2 Properties and hospitality management company MMI Hotel Group – are seeking a 15-year tax abatement to construct a 100-room boutique hotel at the southwest corner of Cooper Street and Trimble Place, south of Madison Avenue in Midtown Memphis.

The rotunda at the Brooks Museum of Art is in transition this week as the surreal figures of Yinka Shonibare’s “Rage of the Ballet Gods” give way to the burlap sculptures of Nnenna Okore that will be suspended from the rotunda dome for the next six months.

In the place where the marquee for Lafayette’s Music Room in Overton Square was once anchored, a new banner went up last week by Loeb Properties reading “The Music Is Back.”

Covered over with a blank tarp is another sign above it also by the Overton Square developers that bears a striking resemblance to the old marquee.

If you think Midtown’s recent momentum, particularly in and around Overton Square, is real growth, you are right.

But it is growth in development that Overton Square developer Bob Loeb believes will bring along a denser population in the area.

This holiday season, Playhouse on the Square administrators are keeping their eyes on the calendar as they rise to a challenge worth a quarter of a million dollars.

The company has until Dec. 31 to raise $250,000 toward its Act II Enhancement Fund Campaign. If this mission is accomplished, the Memphis-based Jeniam Foundation will award Playhouse a grant matching those funds.

The Public Relations Society of America will honor Jackie Nichols, executive producer of Playhouse on the Square, as the 2010 Communicator of the Year Wednesday during a luncheon at the Fogelman Executive Conference Center on the University of Memphis campus.

27. Christmas Tale of BB Gun And Leg-Shaped Lamp Hits Stage -

Playhouse on the Square and Circuit Playhouse are adding the Memphis premiere of a classic about Christmas gone hilariously wrong to their trio of holiday performances. Circuit Playhouse presents “A Christmas Story,” opening Nov. 26. The 1983 film version of the play, starring Peter Billingsley as 9-year-old Ralphie Parker, single-handedly made the phrase “you’ll shoot your eye out” a household joke and started a national craze for leg-shaped bordello lamps.

28. LaVere Adds Playhouse Series to Busy Summer -

Amy LaVere is sandwiching a special gift for her Memphis fans into a jam-packed fall schedule that includes a movie role, touring and recording a new album.

Resource Entertainment Group and Playhouse on the Square have teamed up with the bass-slapping chanteuse to produce Amy LaVere & Friends, a concert series that kicks off June 30 on the Midtown theater’s main stage.

Playhouse On The Square arrived in Overton Square in 1975, setting up shop in what had been Lafayette’s Music Room. The theater company, formed in 1963 by two Overton High School students as The Circuit Players, has become an influential landowner and landlord in the area.

32. Playhouse on the Square Readies for Building’s Debut -

In anticipation of its grand opening production of “Pippin” Jan. 29, the new three-story Playhouse on the Square near Overton Square held its first preview event this week.

The new theater is the culmination of five years of fundraising and more than a year of construction.

35. Playhouse Celebration Slated For Thursday -

Construction officially begins Thursday on the new home for Playhouse on the Square, the city's only professional theater company.

To celebrate the beginning of the $12 million project, theater officials plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the site of the new theater, across the street from the current one at the corner of Union Avenue and Cooper Street.

36. Jones Receives Welcome Home Memphis Designation -

Crye-Leike affiliate broker C. Lauren Jones was the first Realtor in the Memphis market to receive the Welcome Home Memphis designation when she recently earned the honor.

The designation recently was created by the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and is designed to increase affordable housing expertise.

37. Dr. Lendel Joins Memphis Heart Clinic -

Dr. Vasili Lendel has joined Memphis Heart Clinic. Lendel is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. A native of Siberia, Lendel received the Russian Government Award for Academic Excellence. He did his cardiology fellowship at Penn State's medical center in Hershey, Penn., where he received the Chief Cardiology Fellow award.

38. Big Arts Donation To be Announced Today at Rhodes -

He's the chairman of a Nashville record label, a former lieutenant governor of California, a mega-philanthropist and a self-made titan of the music industry.

And today, Mike Curb - who heads Nashville-based Curb Records - is announcing a large-scale investment in Memphis that likely will include a sizable donation to Rhodes College. Details of his project, which apparently will bring together educators, students, artists and more to promote Southern music, all will be unveiled today at a national conference on the arts hosted at Rhodes.

39. Local Businesses Dig For Diamonds at 2006 Showcase -

Professional theater company Playhouse on the Square is $7.5 million into a capital campaign to build a $10 million, 400-seat theater at the corner of Cooper Street and Union Avenue.

The organization recently used funds from the city to start demolishing the old Union Avenue Antique Mall that sits on the site.
