1. Arlington Alderman and School Board Early Vote Opens Friday -

Early voting opens Friday, Sept. 1, in the only scheduled election of 2017 in Shelby County – Arlington municipal elections.

Four of the six seats on the city’s board of aldermen and three seats on the five-member Arlington school board are on the ballot.

2. Pardue, Benjamin Claim Seats at Arlington Filing Deadline -

One of the four races for alderman in Arlington this September was decided at the Thursday, June 15, noon deadline for candidates to file, as was one of the three school board races.

The two sets of races in Arlington are the only regularly scheduled elections of an otherwise off-election year in Shelby County that has come to include two special elections elsewhere in the county.

4. Wide Receiver U? That’s So 20 Years Ago -

At the 2015 SEC Media Days, Tennessee coach Butch Jones referred to his school as “the original Wide Receiver U.”

The reference goes back to the days when the Vols were loaded with fast, talented pass receivers on the perimeter. In a heady stretch from 1982-91, UT had six wide receivers selected in the first round of the NFL draft – Anthony Hancock, Willie Gault, Clyde Duncan, Tim McGee, Anthony Miller and Alvin Harper.

Lakeland voters elected Michelle Dial and Joshua Roman to the city’s board of commissioners Thursday, Sept. 17, in the town's second election of the year.

7. Election Day Arrives in Arlington and Lakeland -

Voters in Arlington and Lakeland go to the polls Thursday, Sept. 17, to decide two sets of municipal elections in the suburban cities.

The polls are open in both cities from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

8. Early Voting Begins In Lakeland, Arlington -

Early voting began Friday, Aug. 28, in the Arlington and Lakeland municipal elections – Shelby County’s second and third elections of 2015.

But most of the early voter turnout in the two suburban towns won’t come until the last day of the early-voting period, Sept. 12. That day, the Shelby County Election Commission will open voting sites in both suburbs. Until then, Arlington and Lakeland residents can cast votes in Downtown Memphis, at 157 Poplar Ave.

9. Collierville Referendum Effort On $95M School Falls Short -

There won’t be a special election later this year in Collierville.

An effort to force a referendum on the $95 million bond issue for the new Collierville High School fell short of the 3,281 signatures it needed to take it to the ballot.

10. Arlington and Lakeland Ballots Take Shape -

With less than two weeks to the June 18 filing deadline for candidates, the Sept. 17 ballots for Arlington and Lakeland elections are taking shape.

Arlington Mayor Mike Wissman is seeking a second, four-year term and as of Thursday, June 4, was unopposed with no potential challenger pulling a qualifying petition.

With less than two weeks to the June 18 filing deadline for candidates, the Sept. 17 ballots for Arlington and Lakeland elections are taking shape.

Arlington Mayor Mike Wissman is seeking a second, four-year term and as of Thursday, June 4, was unopposed with no potential challenger pulling a qualifying petition.

Shelby County Schools board member Mike Wissman is the new mayor of Arlington.

Wissman won the four-way hard fought race for mayor of the Shelby County town in a race in which the coming of schools consolidation became the dominant issue.

13. Arlington Mayor’s Race Nets Four Contenders -

At the noon filing deadline Thursday, June 16, for candidates in the Sept. 15 Arlington and Lakeland elections, there was a four-candidate race for Arlington mayor as expected. And the two incumbent town aldermen seeking re-election had opposition with a three-way battle for the third seat on the Arlington Board of Aldermen.
