2. Great Clips Eyeing Dozens Of Stores In Memphis Area -

Since 1982 Great Clips has opened up more than 4,000 salons across the U.S. and Canada and now has its sights on the Memphis market.

“With more than a million people living in the greater Memphis market, this is very similar to some of the other 180-plus markets where we cut hair,” Great Clips Chief Operating Officer Rob Goggins said. “Since we have a strong presence in nearby markets, it was an obvious choice to continue our expansion into the Memphis market.”

3. Memphis Retail Brokers Preparing for Largest Event of the Year in Vegas -

This week more than 37,000 retail real estate professionals from 58 countries will gather in Las Vegas for the International Council of Shopping Centers’ annual RECon convention.

At the event, which will run May 21-24, there will be no shortage of representatives from the Bluff City who run the gamut from brokers, developers and landlords looking to attract the next big restaurant, hotel or store, to Memphis-based companies like AutoZone and FedEx Office looking to grow their global footprint.

10. Biomedical Company Expanding in Southeast Memphis -

Cognate Bioservices Inc. is launching a 32,500-square-foot expansion at its manufacturing facility at 4600 E. Shelby Drive in southeast Memphis near Lamar Avenue.

11. New Hotel Planned for Downtown Memphis -

Two Ohio-based development firms plan to build a new hotel on a vacant site in Downtown Memphis.

The Orlean Co. of Beachwood, Ohio, and Ceres Development LLC of Westlake, Ohio, plan on building a Cambria Suites on a 3.3-acre lot on the south side of Union across from Fourth Street, just west of Danny Thomas Boulevard.

12. Holding On -

The national outlook for traditional enclosed malls is bleak. No new enclosed mall has been built in the U.S. since 2006. More than 24 have closed since 2010, and an additional 60 are teetering on the edge, according to data from Green Street Advisors. Around 15 percent of malls nationwide are expected to close in the next decade.

13. Wave of New Retail Construction Boosts Contractors -

Retail development in the Memphis area is booming in what construction and retail officials describe as the most active period for retail construction since the recession, with everything from a massive outlet mall in Southaven to grocery stores and smaller, traditional retail centers going up.

14. Real Estate Pros Upbeat -

After finally latching on to the broader national economic recovery in 2013, the Memphis-area commercial real estate market shook of the last vestiges of the Great Recession and roared back to life in 2014 with the office, retail, industrial and apartment sectors all producing solid gains.

15. Conn’s Inc. to Open Second Store in Memphis -

Specialty retailer Conn’s Inc. will open a second store in Memphis, the second of possibly three stores the Texas-based home appliances and furnishings chain plans to open in Tennessee.

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors recently elected several new members to the organization’s board of directors.

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors recently elected several new members to the organization’s board of directors.

19. FedEx Decides Not to Renew a Renaissance Center Lease -

FedEx has decided not to renew a lease at a prominent East Memphis office building.

FedEx Services is not renewing a roughly 11,000-square-foot lease at the 189,644-square-foot Renaissance Center office building at 1715 Aaron Brenner Drive that expires Oct. 1. Employees affected by the decision will be moved to FedEx facilities, part of a broader consolidation and efficiency plan the company has been pursuing.

20. Blume Named to Tennessee Real Estate Commission -

Gary Blume, a veteran agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Experts, has been appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam to a five-year term on the Tennessee Real Estate Commission. Blume is a past president of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and has served twice as president of the Tennessee Real Estate Educational Foundation.

21. Loeb Enjoying Strong Demand in East Memphis -

Pomp & Poise, a new gift store concept specializing in home and garden items, has signed a new lease at Park Place Center.

Pomp and Poise will occupy 1,400 square feet at the East Memphis retail center at the southwest corner of Park Avenue and Ridgeway Road.

22. Commercial Practitioners Have Voice With Council -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council has grown and evolved over the past nine years since its inception, with membership increasing from 150 members in 2004 to more than 350 members this year.

23. Hollywood Feed Expands, Renews Local Leases -

Hollywood Feed has renewed and expanded two of its Memphis locations.

The Memphis-based natural and holistic pet food merchant is growing its 2648 Broad Ave. warehouse from 44,400 square feet to 77,763 square feet.

24. Gen X Inks State’s First Location on Austin Peay -

A trendy Vernon, Calif.-based retailer has inked its first Tennessee location in Austin Peay Plaza.

Gen X Clothing Inc. signed a 35,000-square-foot lease at 3252 Austin Peay Highway. The space was formerly occupied by Big Lots.

25. Commercial Council Elects deWitt, Reilly as Top Leaders -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council announced its 2013 officers and directors Thursday, Aug. 9, at its annual Member Appreciation and Election Party.

Greg deWitt of Grubb & Ellis Memphis will serve as 2013 president. Patrick Reilly of CB Richard Ellis Memphis will serve as vice president.

26. Poplar Transformation -

Two big retail deals have recently been inked on the Poplar Avenue corridor, soon filling empty spaces on the city’s busiest street.

A new Family Dollar is going in the old Stringer’s Garden Center site at 2974 Poplar, while Office Depot and Hollywood Feed are going in the former Samuel’s Furniture space at 5502-5510 Poplar, near South Yates Road.

27. New Owner For Bartlett Car Wash Property -

A former car wash site in Bartlett has traded hands. Nyan Jaf acquired the 0.71-acre lot at 5960 Summer Ave. from Mr. Carwash LLC for $65,000.

28. Unified Moves To East Pointe Biz Center -

An independent forensic engineering and investigations company has relocated its Mid-South Service Center to a more secure location.

Unified Investigations & Sciences Inc. has inked 8,565 square feet in East Pointe Business Center Building D, 3875 Vantech Drive. The Suwanee, Ga.-based tenant was previously located at 3955 Whitebrook Drive, where it serviced Arkansas, North Mississippi and West Tennessee.

29. Gastro Group Opens Office In Senatobia -

Utley Properties has closed on a flurry of deals in its Northwest Plaza Shopping Center in Senatobia in recent weeks.

Dr. Ulric Duncan of Delta Gastroenterology PC has leased 1,200 square feet of space at 113 Northwest Drive for two years.

30. Pizza Eatery Expands Into Southaven -

A husband and wife team from Hernando is expanding its pizzeria business into Southaven.

David J. and Melissa A. Pippin, owners of Three Guys Pizza Pies, have signed a 3,050-square-foot lease in the Shops of DeSoto Center, 1046 Church Road.

31. Nissan North America Renews Lease In SE Shelby -

Nissan North America Inc. has renewed its 413,000-square-foot lease in Southeast Shelby County.

32. iPad Becomes Essential Tool for Brokers -

Commercial real estate brokers and their clients are warming up to the trend of using the iPad as an everyday tool for conducting business.

Since its debut this past March, the iPad 2 – Apple Inc.’s ubiquitous tablet computer – is quickly gaining a foothold as a standard tool for many in the industry.

33. EDGE Board Holds Inaugural Meeting -

The new Economic Development Growth Engine approved its existence Wednesday, Aug. 17, while also addressing some confusing technicalities.

“The president is selected by both mayors – this seems cumbersome,” former Shelby County Commissioner and EDGE director Deidre Malone said at the organization’s inaugural meeting at City Hall. “Having worked in the private sector and for an organization with a similar structure, I think it’s very interesting.”

A budding Savannah, Ga.-based third-party logistics firm is expanding into the Southeast Memphis industrial market. Coastal Logistics Group Inc. has signed a new 50,000-square-foot lease at 5715 Distribution Drive.

36. ‘The Rat’ at Rhodes Gets Makeover -

Rhodes College has filed an $11 million permit with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to expand and renovate its main dining hall facility.

Known by students as “The Rat,” Catherine Burrow Refectory opened in 1958 and has three dining areas – Neely Hall, Hyde Hall and Rollow Hall. Smaller meeting rooms include the Alburty Room, the Davis Room and the Bell Room.

37. Popular Burger Chain Moves Into Memphis -

After years of Five Guys Burgers and Fries having a presence in the Nashville and Knoxville areas, the chain is setting up shop in one of Memphis’ most densely populated areas.

Jubilee Restaurant Group LLC, owner of the franchise, signed a 2,882-square-foot lease in Primacy Place, 1615 Ridgeway Road.

38. Wolfchase Auto Dealer Site Sells for $4M -

A Wolfchase auto dealership facility is officially changing hands and names.

First Tennessee Trust Department has bought the 48,085-square-foot auto dealership formerly known as Cadillac SAAB of Memphis, 7727 U.S. 64, for $4 million.

39. Menlo Deal Tops Noteworthy Leases -

The Daily News in September launched a new weekly column called “Inked” to spotlight Memphis’ commercial leasing landscape.

Despite tough times, local commercial real estate firms were able to ink plenty of deals in the past four months. Here’s a rundown of some of the most noteworthy commercial leases since Inked’s debut:

40. Conway Services Moves to Cordova -

Conway Services Heating, Cooling & Plumbing has signed a new lease to accommodate space for its growing service team.

Conway Services is moving from 6426 Summer Gale Drive in Memphis near Bartlett to a warehouse on 1220 Big Orange Road in Cordova.

41. Skyline Grows Local Footprint on Vantech Dr. -

Skyline Exhibits MidSouth is expanding its presence at East Pointe Business Center.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based tradeshow exhibits company renewed its 9,958-square-foot lease at 3895 Vantech Drive, Suite 9, and expanded into an additional 3,524 square feet. The additional space will enable Skyline to assemble and store exhibits for clients.

42. Menlo Bolsters Local Presence With New Lease -

Menlo Worldwide Logistics LLC is expanding its Memphis-area operations with a new 181,000-square-foot lease in ProLogis Park DeSoto in Olive Branch.

43. Calif. Investor Buys Midtown Apartments -

A vintage apartment complex in Midtown is under new ownership.

Gabrion Properties LLC closed on approximately 20,000 total square feet of space in Cherokee Arms Apartments for $455,000. The three-story apartment complex, 1508 Madison Ave., contains 30 studio apartments with historic vintage architecture.

44. Colliers Sells Property to Union Forklift -

Colliers International recently sold an 18,750-square-foot building in the Perimeter Point Business Park, 2188 Spicer Cove.

45. 14 Applicants File for Two Judicial Vacancies -

Two vacancies in the western divisions of two state appeals courts have drawn a lot of interest from attorneys and judges in West Tennessee.

A total of 14 applicants filed with the Tennessee Judicial Selection Commission for both vacancies by Friday’s deadline.

46. Paragon to Open Fifth Memphis Branch -      Paragon National Bank has announced plans to open a fifth Memphis branch near Oak Court Mall.

47. Giant Pawn Shop to Open in Hickory Hill -

If Wal-Mart ever got into the pawn shop business, it might open something that looks like Top Dollar Pawn at 3700 Hickory Hill Road.

In two to three months, Louisiana-based J.V. Holding Co. Inc. will open the 101,352-square-foot pawn shop in a vacant Target store there.

48. Developer Ford Beach Wrestles 'Silk Purses out of Sows' Ears' By Bringing New Life to Neglected Commercial Properties -

In East Memphis, an 11,500-square-foot retail center with few trappings and a basic design sits tucked between Houston's Restaurant and the Malco Paradiso cinema. It stands as a classic example of what real estate broker Ford Beach does best.

49. MAAR Commercial Council Names Board Members -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council elected the following individuals to its board of directors: Bayard Snowden, president-elect; Michael Greenberg, 2005 director/2006 vice president; Andy Cates, two-year director; Kelly Truitt, two-year director; and Jim Rainer, two-year director. Returning board members include Jon Albright, president; Steve Guinn, vice president; Joel Fulmer, immediate past president; Frank Dyer, Irvin Skopp and Russ Westlake, directors; Richard Groff, Memphis Metro CCIM chapter president; John Bartlett, IREM chapter 20 president; Philip Erstine, Realtors Land Institute Tennessee chapter president; and Joe Steffner, SIOR chapter president.
