Almost 25 years after a surgical team at Baptist Memorial Hospital performed the city’s first heart transplant, more people than ever are getting a second chance at life in its operating room.
Over the years, 286 heart transplants and 86 lung transplants have occurred at the hospital. The 25th anniversary of the first heart transplant occurs next month.

6. Baptist Files $4.4M Auditorium Permit

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis has filed a $4.4 million permit with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to build an auditorium on its Walnut Grove campus. The hospital in June broke ground on the 282-seat auditorium, to be named in honor of the late Dr. H. Edward Garrett Sr., a surgeon who performed the world’s first successful heart bypass surgery in 1964, three years before he joined the staff of the Memphis hospital.

Officials at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a $6.9 million project that will bring a conference center to the campus.
The conference center will include an auditorium named in honor of the late Dr. H. Edward Garrett Sr., a surgeon who performed the world’s first successful heart bypass surgery in 1964, three years before he joined the staff of the Memphis hospital.
