1. Business Formed to Finish Germantown’s Enclave -

Builder-developers John Duke, Mike Murphy, Chip Tayloe and Frank Uhlhorn, along with developer Dan Turley, formed a joint venture business to finish out The Enclave, a luxury estate home infill project they saved in Germantown after it had stalled during the Great Recession.

2. Sugar Services, an Elephant in South End Room, Plans to Stay -

In operation since 1969, Sugar Services is one of the last vestiges of the South End’s legacy as a heavy industrial area. While the factory has continued to process bulk sugar into liquid sugar from its site at 15 W. G.E. Patterson, at the southeast corner of Tennessee Street, developers attracted to the South Main Arts District have built condos and apartments on either side.

3. Around Here, You Hear Belz -

BELZ IS AT IT AGAIN. AND THAT’S A GOOD THING.

If you think you know Memphis, and you don’t know about him, you don’t know Jack.

Following his father Phillip as patriarch to the Belz family, Jack Belz led Belz Enterprises for decades, a company close to or at the top of Tennessee property owners for all that time. A quiet philanthropist and quiet pioneer in the concepts of city gateway centers and discount malls, Belz went very public with the world-class renovation and reopening of The Peabody.

4. Let’s See -

EYE OPENERS. I learned recently that Leadership Memphis is raising $50,000 to start something called Expanding Horizons College & Career Tours, taking 400 promising students from their SUCCESS High School program in eight Memphis schools on college tours in June.

5. We’re All Invited -

MEMPHIS, SERVED IN THE SHELL. Following up last week’s column, this from a reader:

“We have no civic pride, half the population is intent on killing as many as they can and the other part lives behind walls or gates. There was a time in the fifties when you could leave your front door unlocked and keys in the car.”

6. Real Estate ‘Titans’ Share Industry Advice -

In the 1980s Dan Wilkinson and Robert Snowden were deeply involved in developing Memphis International Airport Center.

7. 100 Homage -

38 STORIES, THOUSANDS OF STORIES. I remember when the big hulk was a big deal, its unimaginative gray mass full of imagination and local color.

On our first date in 1967, I took Nora to the Top Of The 100. I’ll never forget when she leaned over the table, her blue eyes wide, and said, “You eat parsley?” The building was two years old and Top Of The 100 was a private club occupying the top three floors with its own set of elevators and a revolving bar on the top, a panorama 38 stories high served straight up above everything else in town.

8. Elmwood Cemetery: Where No One is Forgotten -

More than 30 visitors braved the sweltering summer heat on a recent Friday evening to immerse themselves in the stories of some of Memphis’ most famous, infamous and influential citizens during Elmwood Cemetery’s Evening Stroll.

9. Pinnacle Awards Honor City’s Best Brokers -

11. Committees Not Needed For Creativity -

Creativity goes to committee meetings to die.

“In all the towns and all the cities there are no statues to committees.”

Unknown, probably someone shot down by a committee.

“So,” he said to the committee, “I’ll buy a bunch of jets, fill them with cardboard envelopes, and guarantee overnight delivery … and all I need to get started is, oh, about a zillion dollars.” The committee would have absolutely, positively said no to Fred Smith. They would have told Clarence Saunders that schlepping your own groceries would never work. They would have told Kemmons Wilson where to park his motel idea. They would have told Charlie Vergos that nobody is going to get fired up about ribs from a basement off an alley next to a dumpster.

16. Bowled Over -

Imperial Lanes at 4700 Summer Ave. soon will meet the same fate as a set of pins after a perfectly rolled strike.

A real estate deal is in the works to sell the property on which the bowling alley sits, a place that's become a Memphis landmark since it opened in December 1958. The details haven't been finalized, but the project apparently would involve knocking down the 48-lane bowlers' hotspot and putting up a retail strip center, according to sources close to the deal.
