8. Titans Add 5 New Coaches, Mike Vrabel Keeps 2 Assistants -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The Tennessee Titans have hired five new assistant coaches with coach Mike Vrabel keeping a couple assistants.

The Titans announced the moves Tuesday.

Pat O'Hara will coach quarterbacks with Kerry Coombs overseeing the secondary. Shane Bowen will coach outside linebackers with Tyrone McKenzie in charge of inside linebackers. Rob Moore will coach wide receivers. Vrabel is keeping Craig Aukerman as special teams coach after having been an assistant for that unit. Arthur Smith also is being retained as tight ends coach.

9. Social Media Valuable Tool For FESJC, Sports Teams -

Earlier this week FedEx St. Jude Classic tournament director Darrell Smith put an offer out on Twitter to a noted entertainer with local ties: “Hey @jtimberlake, I know you have a couple shows in PA after Memphis, but feel free to come on back the next Wednesday, June 6, for our pro-am. Peter Freund is a baseball guy. Grew up on the New York Yankees. Today, not only is he principal owner of the Memphis Redbirds, he owns stakes in other minor league teams through his Trinity Baseball Holdings and even has a small slice of the Yankees. Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland has posted a letter from 153 local clergy members in the Memphis area backing the city’s call for a waiver from the Tennessee Historical Commission next month to allow the city to remove Confederate monuments from city parks.

The Memphis Grizzlies and their notable free agents – JaMychal Green, Zach Randolph, Tony Allen and Vince Carter – have been fairly quiet. Just consider all the things that can be done in about 10 minutes: You could jog a very leisurely mile. Or run two miles and be huffing and puffing. You could dance the Minute Waltz – over and over. You could watch Tom Brady run the two-minute drill – like five times. Or in the case of the University of Memphis basketball team on Sunday, Feb. 12 vs. Temple at FedExForum, you could go 10:55 of game clock without scoring one point. And when you do that, you get the result you expect: You lose, in this instance by a score of 74-62.

20. Tubby Gets Mad, Tigers Play Better -

He got their attention. After the Tigers’ dreadful 72-57 loss at UCF last weekend, coach Tubby Smith put away the diplomacy.

“We’re not defending,” he said. “We suck.”

When the Grizzlies start a new season each fall, SEC football teams are in the heart of their season. Walk into FedExForum for an October or November game between the Grizzlies and, say, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and it might look like SEC Saturday broke out.

22. Tigers Model Their Resolve in 70-65 Victory Over UCF -

The game started with the Tigers’ opponent hitting two contested 3-pointers, the Tigers taking and missing a couple of ill-advised jump shots, and UCF running out on two fastbreaks.

Just like that, only two minutes and two seconds into the proceedings, the University of Memphis was losing 10-0. It happened so fast the crowd at FedExForum didn’t even have time for much of a reaction.

The University of Memphis cruised past Christian Brothers University 69-42 Monday night, Nov. 7, at FedExForum in an exhibition game that marked Tubby Smith’s debut as Tigers head coach.

In a few minutes, the University of Memphis basketball team would be starting its first practice of the season. All of 10 scholarship players, two of whom were limited in the first practice because of injuries, would be on the court.

Immediately after the court’s decision on Obergefell v. Hodges, Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper of Nashville said, "Love and equality won. I’m glad the Supreme Court ruled on the right side of history."

NASHVILLE (AP) – A proposal to delay further implementation of the state's Common Core standards was approved in the House on Thursday, even though Republican Gov. Bill Haslam has called them key to Tennessee students' improvement.

43. Belz Launches Hotel Management Venture -

The night before Conduit Global announced this week it will hire 1,000 people to staff a large call center in Shelby County, representatives of the company stayed at The Peabody hotel.

Not only did they let it be known they were impressed by the South’s Grand Hotel, they said they’d love to stay at the Peabody again when they come back to Memphis. Other groups also use the hotel for similar purposes – the University of Memphis men’s basketball team, for example, might bring recruits there, as might St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital when they bring a doctor to town they want to woo to the city.

44. Fisher Joins Boy Scouts Chickasaw Council as CEO -

Richard L. Fisher has joined the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America as chief executive officer. In his new role, Fisher will extend character development and leadership skills to youth who live in the Chickasaw Council territory, which includes the Mississippi Delta, Memphis, and Shelby and Crittenden counties.

45. Peabody Hotel to Hold Fall Rooftop Parties -

The Peabody hotel’s Rooftop Parties are back for a four-party encore fall season.

The all-new fall season began Sept. 12 and ends Oct. 31 with a Halloween bash.

51. Four-Star Forecast -

Recovery continues in the local hotel market, fueled in part by several Downtown luxury hotels that have experienced healthy business in 2011 and anticipate an even stronger performance next year.

Overall occupancy rate year-to-date for all hotels in the Mid-South is 59.4 percent, up from 57.6 percent last year at this time, according to third-quarter statistics from Smith Travel Research. The market’s average daily rate (ADR) has held steady since last year, hovering near $76, while revenue per available room (RevPAR) has jumped to $45.14, up from $43.81.

Memphis City Council members should be back up to full strength by the end of the day Friday, July 22.

The council meets for the second time in a week Friday at 8 a.m. with one item on the agenda – appointing a citizen to the vacant District 7 council seat.

It’s often said that Memphis takes its musical talent for granted.

That certainly wasn’t true Thursday night at Studio on the Square, where an overflow crowd celebrated the Bar-Kays, the Stax back-up band and funkmasters who’ve survived tragedy and setbacks during their 40-year career.

Accurately reading the indicators will not be easy. Some will predict the recession is about to end, just as new indicators point to continuing economic agony for thousands of Memphians.

At the Memphis Bar Association’s Annual Meeting Thursday at The Peabody hotel, the MBA announced its 2010 officers and new members of its board of directors.

Immediate past president Art Quinn passed the gavel to incoming president Ricky E. Wilkins of the Law Offices of Ricky E. Wilkins. John Cannon of Shuttleworth Williams PLLC and Gary K. Smith of Apperson Crump & Maxwell PLC automatically move to the positions of vice president/president-elect and treasurer, respectively. The Daily News has won six awards from the University of Tennessee-Tennessee Press Association. The awards ceremony was held Friday in Chattanooga.

The honors include two first place awards among Group 2 newspapers in Tennessee, or papers with combined weekly circulations of 5,001-15,000 readers.

The Daily News and The Memphis News were among the winners in the 59th annual Green Eyeshade Awards, placing in seven categories including a first place award for law and courts reporting.

NASHVILLE (AP) - Tennessee's deteriorating state budget situation will require an unspecified number of state employees to be laid off, Gov. Phil Bredesen said Wednesday.

Bredesen, a Democrat, said he doesn't see a way to fill what has grown to be a $550 million hole in the budget for the upcoming spending year without cutting the state's work force.
