1993: U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Sr. is acquitted of all charges in his second bank fraud trial in Memphis Federal Court. Ford’s trial by a jury of citizens from outside the Memphis area ends dramatically with the jury foreman reading the verdict on each of the 18 counts against Ford – any one of which, Ford later said, would have ended his political career had he been found guilty.

University of Memphis senior punter Tom Hornsey won the 2013 Ray Guy Award Thursday, Dec. 12, during The Home Depot College Football Awards presented by ESPN.
Hornsey also was named a member of the Walter Camp All-America second team. Hornsey is just the second Tiger to be a Walter Camp All-American. Running back DeAngelo Williams made the team in 2005. Hornsey also was named to USA Today All-America first team.

To be certified sustainable by Project Green Fork, the restaurant must incorporate the following steps into their daily operations: have sustainable products in place, set up a recycling program, compost kitchen waste, replace toxic cleaners with non-toxic cleaners, complete a Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division audit, take necessary steps to reduce energy and water consumption, and demonstrate steps to prevent pollution.

“So,” he said to the committee, “I’ll buy a bunch of jets, fill them with cardboard envelopes, and guarantee overnight delivery … and all I need to get started is, oh, about a zillion dollars.” The committee would have absolutely, positively said no to Fred Smith. They would have told Clarence Saunders that schlepping your own groceries would never work. They would have told Kemmons Wilson where to park his motel idea. They would have told Charlie Vergos that nobody is going to get fired up about ribs from a basement off an alley next to a dumpster.
