The city’s first skatepark is more than a location in Tobey Park near the Mid-South Fairgrounds.

To those who pushed for its development, the park is new life for a culture that had faded a bit from its popularity of the 1980s but never really went away.

5. Shafer Mentors Children Through Skating -

Aaron Shafer works as a production scientist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but after leading a movement for Memphis’ newest skate park and teaching children and teenagers how to drop in on a half-pipe in his backyard, Shafer’s real passion is mentoring kids in the Memphis community.

6. Ramping Up -

After four years of false starts and different locations, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. broke ground on a rainy afternoon Thursday, June 16, for the city’s first public skatepark at Tobey Park.

“This way you know I won’t talk long,” Wharton said to a group of several dozen people, some of whom huddled under a nearby magnolia tree as he stepped out from under a tent into a then-light rain.

7. Skateboard Competition Part of Greenlaw’s Mission -

Skateboarders from near and far are dropping in to compete in a skate contest that is more about congregation than competition.

JSAW, a nonprofit skateboarding ministry with roots in Chanhassen, Minn., is visiting Greenlaw Community Center at 190 Mill Ave. near Uptown to host a skateboarding competition.

Memphians sound off on city’s most pressing needs.

Develop and promote a citywide mentoring campaign. We must heavily invest in the positive development of our children. Many of our Memphis children suffer not from a material poverty, but a poverty of healthy relationships and ultimately a poverty of possibility – of reaching their full potential. Each of us has had supportive network of mentors (“the village”) in our lives, be they our parents, teachers or friends, that have come along side of us to build our self-esteem and to help us navigate a path that moves us closer to realizing our potential.

9. Tobey Transformation -

Nicole Heverly, a Midtowner, didn’t have a reason to visit Tobey Park until a couple months ago when it became the site of the city’s first dog park.

“I heard about it, but I would walk my dog and take him to Overton (Park),” said Heverly. “The first time here I was in love with it. Jay has other dogs to play with.”

10. Skate Park Advocate Shares Passion About Mud Island -

Aaron Shafer is among the backers of a skate park for Mud Island. He helped organize a strong and vocal skate park contingent at hearings this year on a renovation of the river park, along with www.skatelifememphis.org.
