Michael Johnson of Blue Monkey Enterprises told the Center City Revenue Finance Corp. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, that 18-year employee Brandon Moss will be running a deli on the bottom floor of a new three-story, 7,500-square-foot building that will be located at 529 S. Front St.

Fratelli’s Café, the eatery inside Memphis Botanic Garden, has a new owner. Kris Shelby has become the sole proprietor of the lunchtime café, which specializes in fresh soups, salads and sandwiches.

The proposed Midtown Market mixed-use development at Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard has changed as its developers continue to seek financing and adjust more than a year after they unveiled the ambitious but tentative plan.

7. South Front Hits its Stride as Standalone Corridor -

South Front Street, which stretches Downtown from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Central Station, is emerging as its own standalone residential and commercial corridor. What was once a heavy industrial area and warehousing district for South Main’s department stores is undergoing a transformation into Downtown’s most residentially dense neighborhood.

8. Mixed-Use Midtown Market on Tap for Long-Vacant Corner -

Rumors and speculation have long run rampant about potential development at the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, one of Memphis’ busiest intersections.

Some of the speculation involved keeping the eight-story hotel, which was built in the late 1960s, as the central feature of whatever came next. In other scenarios it would be demolished.

9. Grocery, Apartments to Rise at McLean-Union Corner -

Belz Enterprises and Harbour Retail Partners of Marietta, Ga., have a plan to demolish the empty eight-story Artisan Hotel on the southwest corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard.

The project would replace the blighted building with a $43 million mixed-use “Midtown Market” anchored by a “national gourmet grocery store." It also would include 188 apartments: 47 studios; 94 one-bedroom units; and 47 two-bedroom units.

10. Marshall County in Running for Cummins Jobs -

Add the burgeoning industrial area in Marshall County, Miss., to the list of communities competing for a significant chunk of the Cummins Inc. jobs that are currently in Memphis.
