4. Downtown Rising -

Despite a faltering economy, many of America’s downtowns are in the midst of a revival, according to a September U.S. Census study, and Memphis is no exception.

The study, “Patterns of Metropolitan and Micropolitan Population Change: 2000 to 2010,” shows that in many of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas, downtown populations grew at double-digit rates over the last decade, primarily due to the availability of new housing and services. And after previous decades of decline, the residential population in Downtown Memphis increased as well, growing by 7 percent to reach approximately 22,000 residents in 2010, according to the latest metrics compiled by the Downtown Memphis Commission.

5. Obsidian PR Expands to Dallas -

Obsidian Public Relations, a 6-year-old Memphis-based PR firm, is opening a Dallas office this spring.

Crissy Lintner, who until now has been Obsidian’s director of client services, will oversee operations at the Dallas office and has a new role as managing director. As such, Lintner – who joined Obsidian as an account executive in 2008 – will lead business development, client strategy and management of the agency’s Dallas team.

6. Obsidian PR Preps For South Main Move -

Obsidian Public Relations is relocating less than a mile from its current office, in efforts to establish a presence in the South Main Historic Arts District by having its own creative space that will allow plenty of room for growth.

7. Memphis Architecture Firms Recognized for Excellence -

The Memphis chapter of the American Institute of Architects honored the city’s top firms for their contributions to excellence in design during the annual Celebration of Architecture Gala April 16 at Ballet Memphis, 7950 Trinity Road.

8. Gannett Ad Sales Still Dropping Despite Q3 Profit -

NEW YORK (AP) - Net income at Gannett Co. fell 53 percent in the third quarter as the nation's largest newspaper publisher endured another big decline in ad revenue.
