5. Another Broken Egg Café Opening March 30 -

A Southern-inspired restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and a weekend brunch is finally opening in East Memphis at the end of this month.

Gouras Restaurant Group is holding the grand opening for Another Broken Egg Café March 30. The 3,000-square-foot restaurant is opening at Loeb Properties’ Park Place Centre, 6063 Park Ave., and will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week. It will seat 88 indoors, with an additional 48 seats on the outdoor patio.

A new rendering of a proposed LaQuinta Inn & Suites hotel at Union Avenue and Danny Thomas Boulevard Downtown shows a more urban design than a previous stock rendering sent to city and county planners.

Ikea’s site plan for its 269,000-square-foot store on a 42-acre site near Interstate 40 and Germantown Parkway was given the green light by the Memphis-Shelby County Land Use Control Board on Thursday, Feb. 12.

8. Another Downtown Hotel Could Be On the Way -

A Memphis businessman is proposing a suburban-style hotel in the heart of Downtown Memphis while Swedish furniture retailer Ikea moves forward with plans for its first Memphis-area store.

Gopal Govan is seeking a special use permit from the city-county Land Use Control Board to build the four-story, 104-room LaQuinta Inn & Suites hotel on the site of the former New York Suit Exchange at 310 Union Ave., located at Union and Danny Thomas Boulevard. The Land Use Control Board meets Thursday, Feb. 12.

A hospitality company has acquired a key piece of Downtown property for $440,000.

Suna Hospitality LLC purchased the office building at 400 Union Ave. Downtown from Judy Sossaman Brantley, according to a Jan. 12 warranty deed. The property, formerly home to Sullivan Branding after cs2 and Thompson & Co. merged, is strategically located on the north side of Union between South Lauderdale Street and Danny Thomas Boulevard.

GCG Hospitality Inc. has purchased the property at 310 Union Ave., located at Union and Danny Thomas Boulevard, from Sandy and Sage LLC for $1.2 million, according to a Jan. 13 warranty deed.

13. Beale Street Landing Eatery Search Resumes -

There were some signs early on that finding a restaurant operator for Beale Street Landing might be difficult.

The date for the restaurant to open kept getting pushed back and the contract remained unsigned long after it was announced that Beale & Second Inc. had tentatively agreed to operate the restaurant.

The New York Suit Exchange recently took what some might consider a gamble when it opened another store and doubled the number of its employees.

Besides the obvious risk of investing in an expansion during a recession, it also exposed itself to cannibalization. Sales at the new store at 7980 U.S. 64 in Bartlett could have eaten away at the market share of the Downtown store at 310 Union Ave.

16. Why the Struggle to Control Beale Street Continues -

Eight blocks lie between the Shelby County Courthouse and Beale Street.

The courthouse’s seated representations of wisdom, justice, liberty and authority look southward toward the entertainment district. Sometimes, if the wind is blowing in the right direction, you can hear the band in Handy Park from the courthouse steps.
