The 80-plus-year-old institution announced in October it would be shuttering its doors for good in May 2020. Proceeds from the sale of MCA's real estate will create a reserve fund for the teach-out of the current students and retire the college’s real estate debt, according to MCA president Laura Hine.

It’s still election season in 70 percent of the city, which sounds like a weather forecast – part warning and part advisory.
But the seven-day outlook calls for an increased chance of political engagement this week. Early voting in the set of five Memphis City Council runoff races continues this week at eight satellite locations as well as the Downtown site, 157 Poplar Ave.
The runoff elections in council districts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 will determine the identity of a council that will have at least six, possibly seven new members. Super District council members Philip Spinosa and Martavius Jones, the two confirmed new faces on the council, were elected outright on Oct. 8.

33. Early Voting Begins In Lakeland, Arlington -

Early voting began Friday, Aug. 28, in the Arlington and Lakeland municipal elections – Shelby County’s second and third elections of 2015.

But most of the early voter turnout in the two suburban towns won’t come until the last day of the early-voting period, Sept. 12. That day, the Shelby County Election Commission will open voting sites in both suburbs. Until then, Arlington and Lakeland residents can cast votes in Downtown Memphis, at 157 Poplar Ave.

The early voting period opened Friday, July 18, with three Tennessee Supreme Court justices in town as well to campaign for retention in their nonpartisan races at the bottom of the ballot.

There is a unique and persistent part of the political process that gnaws at candidates, separating them from the voters they court and sometimes stalk. You might call it the day of the ballot.

In the weeks leading up to the start of early voting, they get hit up constantly by those putting out endorsement ballots to be distributed during early voting and on election day, most often by paid poll workers. Candidates must pay to be on a ballot, which those organizing the ballots say is necessary to cover printing and distribution costs.

The last day of early voting Thursday, May 1, in advance of the May 6 Shelby County primaries finds Democratic partisans questioning each other and faulting election procedures. Meanwhile, Republican partisans have been relatively quiet.

55. Basar Looks to 2014 County Commission Election -

It may be the first time that a Shelby County Commissioner has given public notice of a barbecue.

Commissioner Steve Basar has held four at his house in the year that he’s been on the elected body. And he told political supporters at a fundraiser last week that he has “sunshined” all of them, a shorthand term to describe the public notice required by Tennessee’s open meetings law – or Sunshine Law – for any deliberative gathering of two or more commissioners.

56. School Board Fields Almost Set as Early Voting Ends -

So far, the Nov. 7 municipal school board races in Arlington and Collierville will be a formality.

The withdrawal deadline for candidates who have filed to run in the six sets of elections in Shelby County’s suburban towns and cities is Thursday, Oct. 3, at noon.

A total of 1,530 citizens voted early through Saturday, June 29, with a strong showing Saturday at the three suburban locations that opened that day for the voting period that ends July 11.

Early voting in the Tennessee presidential primary begins Wednesday, Feb. 15, but the Republican presidential contenders have Arizona and Michigan on their minds.

The early voting period in advance of the March 6 Election Day also includes a set of Shelby County primaries for General Sessions Court clerk, Shelby County district attorney general, property assessor and one Shelby County Commission seat. The winners in those primaries advance to the August county general election ballot.

Early voting in the last election of 2011 expands to two satellite sites Tuesday, Nov. 1, as voters in City Council District 7 decide who will represent the district for a full four-year term.

Election Day is Nov. 10 to decide the runoff contest between Kemba Ford and Lee Harris. Harris beat Ford by four votes in the Oct. 6 city elections. But neither he nor Ford got a majority of the votes cast in the 14-candidate contest, the largest on the ballot. In district council races, that means a runoff election between the candidates with the two highest vote totals.

Early voting opens Friday, Oct. 21, for the last election of 2011 in Shelby County. The race is the runoff for the District 7 Memphis City Council seat between Kemba Ford and Lee Harris. Election Day is Nov. 10.

Early voting begins Friday, Sept. 16, in advance of the Oct. 6 city of Memphis Election Day. Voters across the city can cast early ballots in the races for Memphis mayor, City Council, City Court clerk and City Court judges at 16 locations through Oct. 1.

It began its run at the old Libertyland theme park at the Mid-South Fairgrounds in the 1990s as such traditional picnic political forums as the old St. Peter’s picnic in Midtown were winding down.
