5. Midtown Gated Community, Shelby Farms Hotel Approved by Planning Officials -

A plan to replace the former Red Cross building in Midtown with a 12-unit luxury gated community was approved by the Shelby County Land Use Control Board at its Thursday, August 10 meeting.

Last month, developers Lee Askew and Martin Edwards presented their plans to nearby residents at a public meeting where it was received with mostly favorable results.

6. Last Word: Easy Fishing on Big River, Competing City Priorities and Durham's Fine -

The Arkansas side of the Big River Crossing opened Wednesday for the first time since May 2 when a rising Mississippi River prompted its closing while the crossing proper on the north side of the Harahan Bridge remained open. There is still some of the muddy river left on the Arkansas flood plain and several dozen cranes stopping in Wednesday afternoon for some easy fishing in the shallow waters.

1997: The grand opening of Wolfchase Galleria, which at 1.1 million square feet is larger than the other five Memphis malls open at the time: the Mall of Memphis, Hickory Ridge Mall, Raleigh Springs Mall, Southland Mall and Southbrook Mall. Wolfchase opens with more than 130 tenants, including an eight-screen movie theater, plus 6,000 parking spaces. By comparison, the Mall of Memphis has 885,627 square feet.

2010: On the front page of The Daily News, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton marks one year in office with the city filing more than 130 lawsuits in Shelby County Environmental Court against owners of blighted properties. “I’m a lawyer and I’ve gotten to the point where I’m just saying, ‘Hey, I gotta sue somebody,” he says. Wharton says he feels “right at home” in the mayor’s office. “You never see me arguing with council members,” he adds. “Wonder why that is?” The remark is the closest Wharton comes to comparing his governing style to former Mayor Willie Herenton, whose July 2009 resignation set the stage for the October 2009 special election that Wharton won while serving as Shelby County mayor. The contrast in governing styles is one factor in Wharton’s move to City Hall. But Wharton’s relationship with the council is already becoming more complex as he marks one year as mayor.

It’s been more than a decade since new apartments were built in Midtown, and that’s poised to change in a big way with a wave of new multifamily construction stretching from Binghampton to Crosstown.

2012: Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan raised an estimated $1 million during a private fundraiser at The Racquet Club for the Romney-Ryan presidential ticket. The Memphis stop was one of several fundraisers across the state and included a later gathering at the home of FedEx founder and CEO Fred Smith. In the November presidential general election the Romney-Ryan ticket carried Tennessee. President Barack Obama carried Shelby County.

15. Sites Down to 3 for New West Tennessee Vets Cemetery -

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) – The potential locations for a new West Tennessee veterans cemetery have been pared to three.

The Jackson Sun reported a steering committee last week picked one site in Madison County and two spots in Henderson County as finalists. All sites are between 130 and 140 acres.

The Exchange Building at 130 Madison Ave. has sold for $2.4 million to an Evanston, Ill.-based limited liability company, UIGTN III LLC.

20. Multifamily Owner Defaults On $19.5M Loan -

In what has become a common theme in the multifamily industry, another pair of large apartment complexes will be sold on the courthouse steps.

The Waterford Pointe Apartments at 5045 Airways Blvd. in Whitehaven and the Carrington Manor Apartments at 4805 Winchester Road in Oakhaven have been foreclosed, according to a first-run notice in today’s print edition of The Daily News and also at The Daily News Online, www.memphisdailynews.com.

Nowadays there’s a cell phone app for nearly everything – and restaurant reservations are no exception.

That’s not been lost on local restaurateurs, who are embracing online reservations and finding that they are weathering the struggling economy better as a result.

24. Q1 Property Foreclosures Up Slightly -

Lenders repossessed almost as many homes, apartment buildings and other properties in Shelby County during the first quarter of this year as they did during the same period in 2009.

And in what’s akin to the real estate version of the game hot potato, lenders worked fast to unload what they collected.

Because loan defaults are a common occurrence in this difficult financial climate, last week’s news that the 306-unit Preserve at Southwind Apartments had been foreclosed could easily be chalked up to a case of “another one bites the dust.”

The Exchange Building at 130 Madison Ave. sold for a fraction of its value in a successor trustee’s deed last month when it was reclaimed by the lender following a foreclosure.

27. Commercial Real Estate Raises Red Flags for Bankers -

This month’s foreclosure of the 19-story Exchange Building apartment tower at 130 Madison Ave. is a local example of a problem that’s sounding alarm bells in the banking industry.

It’s the commercial real estate version of the mortgage meltdown that clobbered the housing industry. Signs are emerging that it’s poised to pounce on banks, the real estate industry and policymakers who have spent the past two years working to quell that previous crisis.

29. Steady Clip for Court Cases in ’09 -

Civil court filings for 2009 were higher than the previous two years, according to data from The Daily News Online.

The year-end data for Circuit, Chancery and Probate courts showed 10,794 cases were filed in 2009 compared to 9,766 in 2008 and 10,045 in 2007.

30. Cellular South to Acquire Ala. Wireless Provider -

RIDGELAND, Miss. (AP) - Cellular South has announced plans to acquire Corr Wireless, based in north Alabama.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed Friday. The acquisition requires regulator approval, which Cellular South officials say should be completed in several months.
