The calendar says fall but the weather says summer and in Arlington the flags and notices say election day. The polls at the two polling places in Arlington open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in municipal elections – the only regularly scheduled election of 2017 in Shelby County, which in our politics is frequently regarded as an invitation for departures and vacancies in other office that cause the scheduling of special elections. We’ve already had those earlier this year for a spot on the Lakeland commission and a state House seat.

On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 27-28, the B.R.A.K.E.S. free defensive driving program will be offered at Memphis International Raceway as part of the weekend’s World Series of Drag Racing event.

3. Conn’s Acquires Site for Third Memphis-Area Location -

A Texas-based retailer has acquired a fully leased shopping center in Southaven and will build a new store on an outparcel of the existing retail center.

Conn’s Appliances Inc. acquired the Stateline Square Shopping Center at 550 Stateline Road in Southaven for $5 million from Brixmor Commercial Real Estate, which was doing business as NPK Southaven LLC.

4. Criminal Court Candidates Lined Up for August Ballot -

A total of 21 candidates are in the race for General Sessions Court Judge Division 7.

The field remained at 21 at Monday’s deadline for candidates to withdraw. It is the largest field of any election, primary or general, on the Aug. 5 ballot.

The Memphis Bar Association will sponsor Law Week 2008 through May 1. The Law Week Launch Party will be today at 5 p.m. in Court Square. Barbecue, live music and refreshments will be provided.
