And while Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. as well as several attorneys outside City Hall say they are ready to make the challenge, it will depend on who is willing to not have their vote counted in the Aug. 2 elections after they present a Memphis library card as photo ID to election officials.

5. Linebarger Sued For Charging Delinquent Taxpayers Over 10% Attorney Fees -

A new class action lawsuit has been filed over the practices of a Texas law firm that’s been under fire for years over the way it collects delinquent taxes from Memphis taxpayers.

Two local attorneys filed the suit against Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson LLP, which won a no-bid contract in 2004 from former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton. Attorneys Frank Watson and Don Donati filed the suit Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.

6. Baptist Health Care’s Pounds Elected to Novation Board -

Don Pounds, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp., has been elected to serve on the board of Novation LLC, the health care supply contracting company for VHA, University HealthSystem Consortium and Provista LLC.
Since coming to Baptist in 1987, Pounds has served in a variety of roles, starting as chief financial officer at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. 

7. Ashby Brings Immigration Knowledge To Donati Firm -

Bryce W. Ashby recently rejoined the Donati Law Firm LLP after clerking for Judge Bernice Donald in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. Ashby, who is fluent in Spanish and has worked extensively as an advocate and organizer in Latino and immigrant communities, practices in labor and employment law and civil rights law.

A U.S. Supreme Court decision Monday regarding a Nashville/Davidson County school system employee has clarified a clause of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, offering more protection for employees and shaping the scope of Title VII and how it is used.

12. Harmon Receives Pro Bono Award -

Whitney Harmon, an attorney at Glankler Brown PLLC, has received the first Frank J. Glankler Jr. Pro Bono Award.

Glankler Brown committed this year to taking a minimum of 35 pro bono cases each year from Memphis Area Legal Services, an organization that provides legal assistance for people unable to afford representation. Harmon practices in the area of civil litigation and is a member of the American, Tennessee, Kentucky and Memphis Bar Associations, as well as the Association for Women Attorneys.

13. Scalia Follows Ginsburg's Lead With Dec. Visit -

A little more than a year after one of his closest friends on the U.S. Supreme Court flew to Memphis to address a gathering of legal professionals, Justice Antonin Scalia is coming to town to do the same.
