Research conducted at the University of Memphis is helping medical professionals assess speech understanding in Spanish-speaking children.

The U of M’s Office of Technology Transfer recently licensed intellectual property related to research conducted by Dr. Lisa Lucks Mendel and her students in the Speech Perception Assessment Laboratory to St. Louis-based Auditec Inc., which offers auditory test materials for audiologists, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, hearing professionals and other trained medical professionals.

The 2.6 percent tuition increase approved Tuesday, June 6, applies to undergraduate, graduate and law students. Fees will stay the same, but housing rates will rise 5 percent.

Forty-one state lawmakers signed a letter requesting the state put a hold on its outsourcing plans until the General Assembly can scrutinize its effect on state workers and services.

The state is set to sign a contract April 28 with Chicago-based JLL for facilities management work that could be used by universities and departments statewide. Even local government jobs could be doled out to the contractor.

15. Lawson Brothers Leaving University of Memphis -

Brothers Dedric and K.J. Lawson announced Wednesday, April 5, their intention to transfer from the University of Memphis basketball program.

In a prepared statement released to local media, the Lawsons said they were requesting their release from the U of M. They thanked coach Tubby Smith, who just completed his first season here, and the university for the opportunity to play in their hometown; they were recruited by former coach Josh Pastner. Their father, Keelon Lawson, got a job on staff at that time and remained on staff under Smith.

Two research institutes at the University of Memphis – the FedEx Institute of Technology and the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute – have teamed up to launch a biologistics partnership.

The FedEx institute is referring to partnerships like the new one around biologistics as “clusters,” research areas around which the institute wants to collect projects, research efforts and programming. It’s part of a push by the institute to try and put itself at the center of innovation in the city, according to Cody Behles, the institute’s manager of innovation and research support.

The University of Memphis will host its 27th annual Student Research Forum Monday, March 30.

The 161 undergraduate and graduate students participating can win up to $3,000 in prizes.
