WASHINGTON (AP) – Americans are paying more for food and gas, a trend that threatens to slow the economy at a crucial time.

So far, the spike in such necessities hasn't stopped businesses from stepping up hiring or slowed factory production, which rose in March for the ninth straight month. Still, higher gas prices have led some economists to lower their forecasts for growth for the January-March quarter.

NEW YORK (AP) — The era of falling clothing prices is ending.

Clothing prices have dropped for a decade as tame inflation and cheap overseas labor helped hold down costs. Retailers and clothing makers cut frills and experimented with fabric blends to cut prices during the recession.

Memphis Goodwill Industries will participate in the Donate Movement, a new public awareness movement to emphasize the positive impact that donating clothing and goods can have on communities and the planet.

7. Memphis Film Industry Grows as Economic Force -

If Linn Sitler could write a sequel to the blockbuster growth of the film industry in Memphis, it might sound like this.

Director Craig Brewer, whose film "Hustle & Flow" got its red-carpet premiere in Memphis last week, would return to the Bluff City to shoot his next picture, "Black Snake Moan." He would be undaunted by the lure of film-friendly states like Georgia and Louisiana, even though they offer a slew of tax credits to movie production companies that Tennessee doesn't.
